I saw a similar mark on a coin at my local coin club meeting and everybody there said that it happened because it was stored in such a way that the 'stripe' was exposed to something while the rest of the coin was covered -- or the other way around....hard to say.
Since you say it isn't a raised 'stripe' I'm going to guess that it was covered perhaps by a rubber band. But I'm just guessing.
