Hi,
I'm new here (in posting terms) but, been lurking and reading for a long time now.
Here's a hypothetical question for members:
If you had $500 to buy one coin what would you buy and why?

I would buy a key date coin in a series in which I collect in the highest grade that I could afford. Key dates seem to have kept, or in a lot of cases, risen in value most over the years.

The Trade dollar that I am missing for my 7070. I have missed several nice ones because of my lack of funds...$500 would get the job done nicely!

XF 1875 20c or 1869 3 cent silver if I could find them.

As for why, I need a 3CS for my 7070 and an 1875 20c for my business strike 20c collection.

If it had to be one coin, the cheapest Charlotte or Dahlonega issue I could get my hands on that didn't have too obvious damage (if Numismedia can be believed there, it should at least be possible without getting over the $500 "limit", but a fairly close call given how uncommonly these seem to come to market).
I'm usually passing on $500 coins (the most I've ever paid for a coin was $50, and the most valuable coin I have is an 1841 large cent worth maybe $80), so if I need to buy a $500 coin I would look carefully so that I won't end up with either something that for all I know could actually be worth half of what I paid or something that would be a pain to store because it's too high a grade. Add to this that I usually don't care about key dates unless I'm trying to complete a set (and for that matter I can't think of a set with exactly one key where that key is still affordable, except maybe the Braided Hair large cents), and the above is pretty much the only option left

I wouldn't mind filling the hole in my 1909s IHC set, if I could get one for that

I'd go for one or more key dates in highest grade I could get. Maybe 32D and 32S quarters at higher grades.

for $500, as DUTCH as I am, I would try and get as many high grade coins as possible. I know that's vague, but instead of getting that ONE awesome coin, why not try and spread the $$ evenly if possible?

for example, you could pick up a 1931-S LWC in decent MS63 for around $200.. right? then you could buy something else? I think you get my point. you dont HAVE to get a KEY date, although I agree with everyone above, go for the best key date with that $500. for me, I just like owning any example of a key date I can find. if your finances are loose enough for you to spend $500 often, then id get key dates all day long!. but if this $500 is a ONE TIME thing, say from a b-day gift or tax return, then IN MY OPINION, id use that $500 to complete an MS franklin series or Peace dollar series.

For me, it'll be Soviet proof commems (the common newer ones go for $5 and under, and I'll get as many of the older ones as I can - theoretically the entire post-Olympic part would cost very close to $500 in total).
The question, however, was about one coin, and I couldn't think of many $500 coins I wanted that weren't either high MS or keys (see my post for more details).

I'm not sure.. But I think I would buy an nice silver coin from "Floris V" (1256 -- 1296).. a few kilometer from where I was born and raised and still live... that dude had build a small castle there.. some where in the 1950's they found the remains of that building..

A second option is an (key-date) VOC coin from "West Friesland" because they are struck quite close where I live..

Conclusion, it will some history from the erea where I live..
