To my own surprise I'm strongly considering picking up the just released 5 oz El Yunque and I wanted to see how others here feel about this large format America the Beautiful silver bullion series. I really like the conventional silver proof ATB series. I'm just not sure how I feel about the "big quarters" version. All thoughts, opinions, and observations on the desirability and collectibility of this large format silver is most welcome!

I like 5 oz. rounds personally, an never owned these coins, but considered putting a set together, as it would be another solid silver project. If I actually stuck with it an saw it through until I had all of the current releases....

Hawk, you would have 110 oz. of non-duplicating silver, if you considered the two different finishes to be two separate series. Next to 5/10oz. bullion bars, the pucks are an easy, economical way to stack silver.
They are big, hefty discs that are little known to the general public, as for the collecting community, except for a remnant population from last year's frenzy over these coins, have more or less shunned these "coins" probably for their expense and the size. Graded plaques are notoriously hard to stack and are paperback sized. It's a good series that's probably at it's nadir right now, which means if you have the funds, very easy pickings, and the future is pretty bright on these, as the Mint seems determined to churn them out for the duration, so someday this set will be a substantial silver holding in its entirety. A niche product now like the gold spouses, but once it's ended its run, people will take notice, and just see how few 25,000-27,000 coins really are. It always happens this way.

Thanks for the perspective, Hawk. This whole 2012 ATB series has really gotten my attention. I've mentioned in other message threads that I feel I'm way too narrow in my Ag stacking. I've got single examples of most of the popular 1 oz bullion coins from the US, Canada, Mexico, UK, Austria, and Australia. And, of course, I've got a modest 90% collection. However, the bulk of my stack is in good ole ASE and SML bullion coins. Why? At some point I just decided that this was the way to get "serious" about growing my stack. I'll be the first to admit I was wrong. A well diversified stack of quality silver is both more enjoyable and, frankly, more marketable when it's time to sell. Anyway, I'm looking forward to my El Yunque purchase and collecting the rest of the series as resources allow.

I don't know why they get a bad wrap, say four an five oz. coins. They just make sense, granted not stacking so well always, or space efficient which is a big factor for many....
I tell you what, I am a HUGE fan of the old raised 4 an 5 oz. Civil war rounds, or the NASA rounds from the NY mint an such, made way back in the day....
They are all way rare, an when they come up they draw much attention an bring nice premiums as people realize their rareness. Plus, everyone seems to relate to NASA or civil war history. In time as Biz was saying, the same will be true for these more modern day 5 oz. quarter state park rounds.....

I love them! The ATB designs are some of the most beautiful designs to come out of the mint in many a decade, and my eyesight is such that it's hard for me to appreciate the details on the quarters. I was late getting on board, so I ended up buying the bullion versions of the 2010 set due to the aftermarket markup on the collector versions. For the 2011 set, I was able to get the collector versions from the mint at $205 apiece, which seemed like a good deal when silver was still in the mid $30s (and compared to the earlier prices of $275 and 225). For the 2012 set, I'm hesitant to pay $205 now that silver is down in the $27-28 range, so I just bought a bullion version of the El Yunque coin for $163 from a dealer. Unless silver suddenly jumps back up and the mint keeps the prices steady, I will probably stick with the bullion versions this year.

I like these. The reverses on them are nice and detailed. I must admit that I find it odd that they have a 25 cent face value though. Sooooo, basically you need 20 oz of silver to get a dollar. Just seems like they could have changed the face value on them. The 2010 versions are rather expensive.

@SDcoinguy: My "dealer" was Provident Metal. I just checked, and they are still offering the bullion version of the 5 oz. El Yunque for a list price of $163: http://www.providentmetals.com/2012...to-rico.htmlWith $8 shipping, that's still only $171 (compared to $205 plus shipping from the Mint for the "collector" version).

Ok, complete and total newbie question here but what is difference between the "collector" version that the mint is offering and the bullion version referenced above? It appears that they have different mint marks, P for the collector and W for the bullion.

Different mint marks, different finishes (the "collector" version has something called a "vapor blast" finish which makes it more matte than shiny) and you get a cardboard box with COA instead of just a plastic capsule when you buy the collector version.

Here's a comparison between the two finishes: The first is the bullion coin, the second is the collector coin.

I have 2011 sets and some of 2012. I think they are nice sets, but for me, it has lost a little steam in terms of stacking them. Good luck!

I like them, but I want to see what the mint is going to do with pricing. I'm 3/5 on the 2010, so I'm inclined to at least finish that year.
I also want the Olympic Nat Forest. Since I'm from Washington.
