I don't imagine they are in any hurry to release them as there is MUCH more MONEY to be made in these new dead Presidents. I will publicly say the 2007 Sacagawea will be a keeper as the set, thus far, has already exceeded my expectations. Getting them will be the problem!

It's my understanding that the new Prez coins have to be made of the same alloy as the Sacs. I think that's the only restriction.

The law says they have to mint Sacs along with the New dollars. I think Errorcoins is correct on the ratio. It's a 3 to 1 deal. The article I read quoted the mint director as saying they weren't sure if they were going to release these Sac coins right away. By law they have to mint them, but they don't have to release them right away. They can just store them with the rest of the surplus I also heard that the Prez dollars are the same composition, weight and size and the Sacs. I bet that means they save on setup time when they do a die change. I wonder if you'll find and error coins with a Prez on one side and a Sac strike on the other side?

The release date for the 2007 Sackies, bags and rolls is March 20th.
The law says that 1/3 of the total dollar coins minted must be Sackies. (Not 3 to 1) Theres gonna be tons of them layin' in storage. 300 million George coins means 150 million Sac's and thats just the first President. 39 more to go.(At least)

If I recall correctly there was a movement starting to halt the Sacagawea production by Congress and the Treasury Dept. but not sure if it ever got off the ground. One also wants to keep in mind the Sackie will be included in the mint and proof sets so the mint knows they will be using at least some of them. I still say the Sackie will out perform the Presidential dollars FOREVER due to the sheer number of collectors who will be collecting Presidents. Time will tell.

I really don't understand the thought process that went into making the decision about minting all those Sacs. We all know they will never circulate, unless the government does away with the dollar bill. They will end up sharing space in a warehouse with the 2000 and 2001 sacs. Eventually the presidental dollars will also end up there.

I am a firm believer that dollar coins will work if the paper note is eliminated. But until that happens, it would really be a waste of time and money producing these. On the other hand, the feds could save a bundle minting the dollar coins and stopping production of the paper note. Coins are more durable and would last signicicantly longer..thus a BIG savings.

Will the sacs still be included in the mint sets?

Wasn't it members of Congress from one of the Dakotas who refused to go along with the Presidential Series unless the Sacagaweas were continued?

Bag, roll and set sales of the sackies has totaled about 6 million coins in each of the last 5 years. A drop in the bucket when you think of how many of these things will be minted this year (500 million? maybe more?) I bet bag and roll sales of the Sackies will be lower this year due to people buying the President dollars instead.

whether or not we get rid of the dollar bill it just seems to make sense to me that if the gov't wants to "excite" the public about the dollar coin (in whatever style) there should be more vending machines and toll booths, parking meters and such to accept these coins. There is definitely more push to get the retailers to get on board with the dollar coins. JMO

If I had my own retail opperation, I would get the dollar coins and use them as change instead of relying solely on the paper note. Maybe people would get used to using them. Businesses should push using the new coin, it would be great for public awareness.
