Kennedy 1/2 Experts? SMS Vs Just Unc.

hadleydog Pillar of the Community Canada 1267 Posts	Posted 02/19/2007 12:50 pm Unfortunately, business strikes and sms coins were struck from the same dies. The only difference was planchet prep and striking pressure, so in many cases there simply is no way to be certain about an individual coin. Some sms are very obvious because they look like proofs. Others are nothing more than a guess. The sets were labeled sms. They were also the only sets issued during those years, (1965 to 1967). The 1965 set is a flat pack that says "SS" in the lower left corner. The 1966 and 1967 sets are plastic and come with a blue box and say Special Mint Set. Hope this helps. garylcsr Pillar of the Community United States 1952 Posts	Posted 02/19/2007 11:01 pm the 1965 SMS is the only set from the sms sets that you can be sure what you are getting anymore. the 66&67 are both in plastic proof like case's that are not sealed or glued you can open them up and change the nicer coins for almost anything you want to add. so be careful buying these two sets you can be burned very easy with these two sets. gormang Valued Member United States 182 Posts	Posted 02/20/2007 10:13 am Thanks for your responses. I just purshased a set of Kennedy half dollars and there are three sets of 65-67 coins. One I have no doubt is from the SMS sets, one I know is not from the SMS sets and one I'm not sure. The ones that I'm not quite sure about are very nice and fall between the other two, That's why I'm not sure... I think I'm going to lean the way of saying they are from the SMS sets.
