I have what I am certain is a VAM on a 1886 P morgan, I have the Cherry Pickers Guide, and it says a VAM 1c has 5 clash marks on the right field of the reverse, two up and 3 lower. My morgan has, as far as I can see, just 1 mark, it looks exactly like, and is in the same place as the 2 higher marks in the book. I cannot get a picture, my camera won't focus well enough. Now my question, is this a different VAM,or a earlier version of the 1c,(I mean are all die clashes in that area considered 1c's)? and last who can I order the encyclopedia from so I can find answers like this for myself, the bookstores around here can't even find it on their system by title or authors.

Your coin was struck from dies that were clashed once, the 1C dies were clashed 5 times. Clashing is a normal part of minting and won't get a VAM designation on it's own unless there is letter transfer, like a E, N, S, or T.

The mark you are seeing is this..

1886-Morgan-VAM-1c

the back of Liberty's cap.

Thanks for the illustration Becky, I see what caused the clash. The 1C w/five clashes must have rotated some between the 2 and 3rd clash marks. Since the 1C does not have any letter transfer, where is the cutoff to it becoming a VAM? is it after 3 hits or does it need all 5? I am trying to learn what I can until I get my book from online.

VAMs have evolved over time. Some of the stuff Leroy was assigning VAM #'s to earlier, he no longer does. If there is no letter transfer on a clash, it no longer gets a VAM #, no matter how many clashes are involved. There is a book out on "Elite Clashes" but I haven't gone there.....

Hang out in Vamworld or Ashmore for a while and check them out. They are getting closer every day to being a online VAM books. http://vamworld.wikispaces.com/Morg...By+Date
