Y'all reckon this 1883 O Morgan could be a VAM4? I bought it as a replacement for the '83 O I had - some of you may recall that that one had a big old ugly pit right in front of Liberty's nose. I was going to post this one in the coin grading section when I took a closer look - seems like it might be an O/O mint mark - looks a mite funny anyway - don't know for sure, so I'm turning to the resident vam-sters - whatcha y'all think? Looks like it to me, but your pic would have to be closer on the MM for me to be sure. These old eyes don't see that small stuff any more....

Tried to get a little closer scan of the mint mark. 'Course, the quality of pictures from a scanner leaves a mite to be desired. At least with my scanner - probably the operator rather than the scanner. Hope this gives a little better view of the mint mark. Ralph Image: Close Up - O Mint Mark.jpg3.71 KB

Yep - it is a pretty spiffy find, huh? Didn't expect it to be anything more than an '83 O, and there's scads of them around. Like I said, it was purchased as a replacement for the one I had that was bodybag grade due to the large pit on the obverse, and I didn't have to pay a whole bunch for it - for a poor boy, that's the best part of it all. I reckon the seller didn't know about it being a possible VAM-4 either, or I 'spect it would have been priced higher. Pays to give those coins a second look! Ralph

I edited the topic to include the date and mint mark - forgot it the first time.

Becky, I've been in contact with Leroy Van Allen in regards to the this being a VAM 4, and, after viewing the coin, he has advised me that it is indeed a VAM 4 as described in the revised description in the 2006 VAM supplememt. This is only my 3rd VAM, and, since this area of the Morgan dollar World is still pretty new to me, I think this is as cool as it gets. Ralph

Hey Ralph, if Leroy says it's a 4, it's a 4. Very cool, thanks for sharing.

Metalman - I have no idea as to any added value. I'm sure there are others more knowledgable than me in this family who can tell you the exact amount that it may be worth, but that's not where my interest lies. The book doesn't list it as rare, but it does indicate that it is scarce - "1883-O VAM 4 is desirable as a dramatic O/O variety".
