I am working like a little beaver trying to complete my circulated Statehood Quarters sets. I was wondering if anyone has come accross any San Francisco clad or proof silver quarters from this set. So far I have found a grand total of -0-. It's beginning to look like I will have to start trying to get these coins from either a coin store or at a local coin show. The next big local coin show around me is towards the end of June. A big national show is going to be here around August sometime.

Your only way of finding those would have been in proof sets - San Francisco did not make these coins for circulation or even in business strikes - only proof. So it makes sense that you don't have any if you're just pulling from circulation.

At times, people do break open proof sets and spend the coins. So, it is possible to find a S-proof in circulation, but its unlikely.

It would be almost impossible, imo, that someone could complete the proof State Quarters set from circulation, unless of course someone dumped a whole collection of them at the bank and one found the set intact. It would take some dedicated searching and luck to find and complete the proof set from circulation. The clad proofs are somewhat cheap and it won't take too much to complete the set if you buy them.

It would take an act of Providence to be at the right time and place to find a set of SF state proofs in a roll or in a Coinstar machine. You would most likely have to buy them from a dealer or if you are collecting only from circulation, you can get album that skips the proofs altogether, as they are not made for circulation.

I may also have to start looking at the possibility of taking them out of proof sets. I was wondering what the feeling is of doing that at this stage of the game? I've done just that for the America the Beautiful silver proof sets, but what about doing the same for the Statehood Quarters after the sets have been out there for awhile. The only downside that I can think of is that I'll be depleting the number of proof sets that are out there now that cannot be replaced.

I found it is easier to buy the proofs outright from a dealer or the mint. Next week I make the long drive to 5th and Arch (1.5 miles from she-who-must-be obeyed's office) to get the 2012 set of 2012 proofs and uncs. Crack the proofs and uncs and put them in my albums (except the quarter and dollar sets which stand alone in my collections) and stick them in Dansco albums. Lucky I now live in Philadelphia to make it easy.

When you buy or find the quarters singly, you can be assured that they once lived in a proof set. If you want to fill the holes, then do not hesitate to break apart a proof set. I have broken apart a lot of proof sets to fill my holes and have no regrets.

Not really. IF you go to coin shows you would see many dealers selling individual Proof coins. They break out many for just those people that need them for a collection. I too break out many for my Albums.

FYI......
If you are going to get Proof and Silver Proof OGP's and such material for breaking out the coins for albums...(which I highly suggest doing).....A word of warning !
GET SOME COTTON GLOVES !
NEVER handle Proof coins with your bare hands.....and don't breathe on them.....or slide them on a surface, etc. And even with the gloves, you should avoid touching the obverse or reverse.....only touch the "edge" of the coins. And to keep "exposure" to air and gasses - very limited - with your Proof coins, you also should put them QUICKLY into their new place of residence.
