When selecting which of my Newfoundland Halves to send in I included this 1908 thinking it might do better than it did. As I've spent far more time examining Victorian pieces I'm not well-versed with the other varieties. I'm not lamenting the result; rather I'd like to collect a few tips on how to grade Edward VII and George V so I can identify the wear spots on this item. Of course I'm familiar with the crown line and its diamonds. It looks as though the moustache is blending into the cheek and there's some noise in the fields but it's a very attractive coin. Thanks as always.

Thomas
When grading Edward halfs the first think I look at is the vertical jewels in the crown and the cross at the top of those jewels. I look for any flattening of the jewels and any wear on the cross above the jewels. After that I look at the mustache, ear, and ribbon on the shoulder. I hope that helps.
The coin looks graded correctly. Depending on the amount of lustre still present it may have made EF45. I know it looks better but there is not alot of difference between EF and UNC.
Great looking coin there and hard to find in higher grades. Deffinitely EF40 PQ.

I think that coin is a solid EF-45, perhaps ICCS was feeling rather conservative on that particular day. Nice coin...
