I picked mine because I was glued to the TV watching the news when I heard the words: The Eagle has landed.

I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it to be truthful. I went through my coins, narrowed it down to good portraits, and selected the one I thought most personified (in appearance) what I thought a Roman Emperor would look like. On top of that, I selected one I thought would be less likely that someone else might use, Galba. Since my selction, I have acquired some very nice portraits of Julius Caesar, Augustus, Otho, etc, but I have decided to stay with Galba for the time being. Although we look nothing alike, I would like to imagine I have a personality resembling Galba's portrait. Here is the coin I used:

I'm in the process of switching my avatar around. I was using a Walking Liberty avatar since that is one of my favorite modern US coins.

I picked my avatar because I was participating a lot more in the USA classic coins forum and the Claudius II looks closer to the color of modern coins so I was trying to spark some interest in ancients and bring some other coin collectors over to this forum. I collected USA coins since 1990 and was starting to lose interest in coins altogether until I went to ancients. I'm glad I collected USA and world coins and currencies but I haven't had so much fun in years.

I chose mine because the Athens owl tetradrachm was the coin that got me interested years ago. I have always wanted one, but only recently did I get one--sadly not the beauty in my avatar.

*awkward* => I collect "so many" different things ... ummm, like these "antique" beer serving trays from the 30's and 40's (maybe that's not "antique" in this forum?) ... anyway => I kinda like to party every now and then, so picking one of these beer trays seemed like a fairly cool idea ... and of the three that I considered, I figured that my current "Miller High Life" kinda summed-up my mojo ... *sigh*

I don't have one yet because I'm extremely lazy. Maybe after I take a nap, I can muster up enough energy to click on some things.....zzzzzzzzz

I picked mine because, at the time I joined the forum, it was the nicest (and priciest) ancient coin I owned. The coin itself is actually slightly oval: Susan "squashed" it a little to make it fit the 100x100 avatar size. So my two pieces of advice would be: - pick something with bold, clear detail, that still looks good when shrunk down to a teeny tiny avatar pic. If I'd picked the rose side of my coin, it wouldn't have looked anywhere near as cool. - if you pick something oddly-shaped and you don't want it stretched or squashed, tell Susan it's supposed to be oddly-shaped.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I chose mine because I collect ancients and Antoninous Pius was one of Romes better emperors.

I really like the bust on my Constantius II; it's well defined, well proportioned, nicely worn, and he has a stern, confident look, and I thought it would make the obverse a good choice for my avatar. Plus I wanted something different (a late Roman bronze), since ancient collectors usually pick more popular coins like denarii and ancient Greeks as their avatars.

Well I didn't have an avatar until I sent mine in this weekend! How ironic? Susan hasn't put it up yet. I have had a hard time choosing one. As a collector of Biblicals, I've had a hard time picking a Roman emperor or procurator that killed Christians or Jews and I don't own any Greeks, so what did I pick? You'll have to wait and see. But it seemed to be appropriate to me and I like it a lot!

Thank all of you that posted on this thread. I still don't know what I'll pick, but its nice to know that you can change it... Torn between modern and my new love for the Ancient....

Just curious? How long does it take to get an avatar put up? I've emailed Susan, at susan@coincommunity.com twice now, and haven't gotten a response or an avatar. Is Susan on vacation? Or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for the help!
