Am looking for a USB Microscope to photograph my coins but I have a 64 bit computer running Windows 7 and after reading specifications most say the microscopes will only run on 32 bit systems. Thought I was getting a much better computer by buying a 64 bit one over a 32 bit one but am finding out a lot of things dont work on a 64 bit PC that do on a 32. Back to original question. Need a USB Microscope for photographing my coins but only have a 64 bit PC running Windows 7. Also in the price range of $50 to $100.

Thanks for an help you can give me

I had the same problem when looking for one for my comp. I run Win 7 Pro. I bought one of the 32 bit microscopes that everyone sells. Dont let them fool you they are all the same. Downloaded a Free program AvaCam, just a basic image capture program. My version of Win picked up drivers as soon as I plugged it in. I have yet to figure out the zoom feature perfecty but just adjust the height of the camera. Havent had any issues with it yet.

If one has an issue with Windows 7, 64 bit compatibility, I suggest reading the following thread to see the reviews on the featured USB cameras.

I have been using the Manbate it7 on a Windows 7,64 bit platform since January with no problems.

I have read the thread but nowhere does it mention use by a 64 bit PC. I bought a similar one from pengcart2011 on ebay. Tried for two weeks but disk would not run on my PC. He downloaded the files and they still wouldnt install the needed program. Started installing but would get the message install crashed. Tried different files, nothing. Reved up my old Vista 32 bit and still could not get anything to install. Frustration set in so I sent it back. 2 weeks now and still havent heard from him about it even though I sent three emails to him. Next thing is to open up a case against him with ebay. Will still try another one though.

edgman,

After reviewing the above-referenced thread:

a) I failed to state that the iT-7 USB camera IS 100% compatible with the Windows 7 platform based upon my own personal tests and equipment and

b) I misspelled the manufacturer's name is this thread; it should be spelled Mambate: not Manbate

Also, it is always a good idea to contact a manufacturer's technical or customer service department 'before' purchasing any product to address any lingering software or hardware compatibility concerns...

By the way this Mambate iT-7 usually runs about $ 30 including S/H.

With these usb microscopes. Can you use them to take full frame pictures of coins and if its a proof do you still have the reflection of the microscope like you do with a normal digital camera in macro mode?

Regarding the proof coins' pictures if you go up to the 8/26 post in this thread and click on the link that I provided, you will be able to see some proof Lincoln cents that I photographed side-by-side using my USB camera.

In these particular shots it was necessary to turn off the USB-attached LED lights and use a home made diffuser unit that I designed using reflective lighting etc.

I see an American Silver Eagle in that link which seems to have reflections in it but I didnt see any proof Lincoln cents. The reflections in the ASE arent too bad as its broken up by the obverse design but on say an Ike which is my test case which is probably 80% flat/reflective/mirror image, I would probably be able to actually make out detail of the scope.

Thanks though. I'll keep searching for an idea. My dad has one though it involves some construction and arts and crafts type stuff lol. I'll report back. I think anything that doesn't somehow use a black shield around the black lense is just going to show the reflection of whatever is around the lense. (That is unless you have a macro mode that lets you take a picture from a large enough distance away that the reflection doesn't show up. I'm talking about macro modes where the best detail is about 5 or 6cm away.)

Thanks anyway. :)

Schwanke,

You might want to revisit

https://goccf.com/t/88598&whichpage=4

to check out some diffusion-aided shots I just finished last night on a low MS Morgan $1.

My setup is economical and may assist if one is following a budget.

fyi,

Interesting setup hehe. I love the ingenuity. My dad is working on this with me and our current plan is to find a proper sized plastic box from Office Depot or Staples or something that has a translucent texture so that the light will diffuse through it. The distance from end to end is going to be the exact distance my camera needs to sit securely in a hole at one end and have the full frame of the 2x2 flip in focus at the other. The area around the camera will be spray painted matt black and the area around the coin will act as the diffuser. Be interesting to see if this works. Part of my problem is the reflection. On proof coins you can see the camera in the coin reflective surface especially if the camera lense reflection lines up with a particularly flat spot. We may not be able to get rid of all of it but by placing something around the lense going outward so that everything is black should give a good enough effect.

I will tell him about the " Wal-mart Super Pro Light Diffusion System 9000" though. If nothing else he'll apreciate its McGuyver effect. :D
