In one $50 bag of pennies I found 169 Wheats - all common dates though

Who cares if they are common dates and mintmarks? They are still cool coins and I'd keep them too! Congrats on a nice find there!

Were they all in fairly poor condition? Just trying to determine why you think it was a metal detectorists dump. :)
Either way...169 wheats is a great find in my book.

Trust me, you would not want any rolls from a metal detectorist dump. The ones I drop off have some nice coins on the outside and all the crappy ones on the inside. Most of our modern coins corrode into flat little waffers that are nasty. And since you find mostly modern stuff...

That's a lot of wheats to find! I'm a dirt fisherman and dug 600+ wheats my second year out. Last year, I dug 250+...Never would I dump those wheatbacks, they were too hard to earn!
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

I thought they were all in good condition except for a few. If I had a digital camera I would take some pictures. Although I wouldn't know a cleaned coin if I saw one there were several non-wheat that had some very strange toning. I assumed they had been cleaned by some process. One penny was nearly all blue, another had three distinct separate sections all different colors sort of what you would see on a kid's Easter egg. Other coins were sooooo corroded that when I put them back through the machine I sure they will go into the reject bin. I've gotten about 10 - 12 bags before and this one was different just in the number of bad coins in it. One surprise is that if this was a dump I more Canadian pennies (18) than normal which is about 12.

Nice haul!
Wheaties are getting rare in circulation. That's quite an astounding number all in one place. :-)
