Like most newbies, I still haven't found my coin collecting niche. I bought a full set of albums for cents and all current clad denominations and have pretty much filled them from roll hunting and the coin jar from the coffee club at work. Some coins obviously look better than others. The problem is, being on the east coast I have much nicer examples of almost every coin from Philly than from Denver, or San Francisco (for cents and nickels). My cent album especially looks striped because of the better looking red Philly cents alternating with brown Denver cents.

I will be going to a week long conference in San Diego this summer so I figured that I would roll hunt a bank or two while there. I'm going to bring out my cent and dollar albums at least. My question is how does TSA respond to a guy with rolls of change in his carry-on bag on the way home? I don't want to put them in checked bag just because I don't have confidence that they'll still be there when I get home. I don't think there will be problems with the albums, but I'm not sure about bringing rolls home. I'm a little leery about being whisked away for interrogation by TSA because they see 5 lbs of metal in my carry-on on the x-ray machine and possibly consider me a risk to the flight or a terrorist.

I'm going to keep the nice Denver coins and would like to keep all pre-'82 cents, so there could be a lot of rolls to come home, depending on how much I can get done in a week. Would mailing or Fed-Exing them be a viable alternative, or would that be too expensive?

Thanks for any advice that anyone has on this.

-Tom

P.S. If this isn't the right forum to post this topic, please let me know. Thanks!

P.P.S. If anyone knows of a good coin shop near the Westin Hotel in downtown San Diego, I'm all ears.

Just MAIL your finds home in a Flat Rate Priority Mail Box, with signature conf, so it doesn't get left on your doorsteps, for a thief to steal...forget flying with them..the extra weight will cost too much, from what I hear of flying costs these days.
I have your opposite problem, living in CA...we never get ANY P-Mint new coins here...maybe 1-in 750 at best..there was an article in a past ANA monthly Magazine about the breakdown of demographics for this distribution of coins...you can look it up in their archives...as you would expect, the East Coast gets the bulk of the P-Mint coins, and the West Coast D-Mint.

I've carried 20+ rolls of half dollars through the TSA line. I just told the inspectors what I had and they took a careful look at the X-Ray scanner. One time they pulled out a couple rolls, glanced at them, and put them back. I wouldn't worry about it and I certainly wouldn't go to the trouble, risk, and expense of mailing them home.

On one occasion I stopped at a bank on the way to the airport and traded my reject rolls for cash to avoid having to carry the weight. Even though I didn't have an account the teller took them with no complaint (and no fee!).

Just depends on how many rolls he ends up with wether it's worth shipping or not. If its a bunch and you don't wanna haul that much weight then I would get a flat rate box and you don't have the hassle of all that weight.

I've thought about exchanging a sealed box of pennies for one from a member here on the east coast. Might be the only way for me to get rolls with lots of Philly's.

Thanks for the responses everyone. And thanks Jaobler for your input specifically. I was hoping that someone had done this before me and would report on it. I was considering mailing them home, but if others have gone through TSA without trouble then I might take the chance. Maybe I'll do both...

I've thought about bringing some Philly rolls out to San Diego too and releasing them into the wild in the hopes that they would reach fellow roll searchers. Same with the Denvers I bring back that I don't need. I plan to release a lot of them into the system here.

If anyone from San Diego wants to do an exchange let me know.

I carried 30 pounds of wheat cents back from New York a year ago and all it took was that I was a coin collector. The guy looking at the X ray looked like he was abot to draw his gun though. They dont have any issue with rolls but leave time for them to search you cause they will.
