Absolute rubbish. There are no 1923 proof pennys - they were planned but I dont think any were made. Also, if you look in the description, they say it is "Uncirculated". Considering the seller has no feedback, I would say its just an ordinary old 1923 penny which the seller thinks he can make a fast buck out of.

The photos are certainly detailed enough to instill immediate confidence.

Hi Guys, Enoilgam according to MacDonalds there are "proof" 1923 penny's. Value $140,000.00. So the starting bid of $245 is kinda low.. Ok lets think this through. 1) no current feedback on seller. 2) if description is correct, then coin MASSIVELY under valued. 3) really poor photos. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say something just does not add up. Bid if you want guys, I'll not be competing against you for it.

The Melbourne mint planned to produce a 1923 proof set for the British Empire exhibition in 1924, they only successfully produced half pennies, pennies and florins. They're extremely rare (I've only encountered 2 of each) but they do exist. This coin is not a proof, it's not even a good quality business strike.

My mistake - I was going off bluesheet but looking at it again I think I misread it.

Yes you can read about it here: http://www.bluesheet.com.au/Austral...3_Proof_(PR)It's a very interesting year, the Melbourne was supposed to produce all denominations for the first time but when producing the proof coins, the high strike pressure caused die cracks (the strike pressure was far greater than the 1916-1920 specimen strikes) and they were never able to complete the set. No threepence or sixpence are known in proof but proof-like examples of all denominations (other than the half penny and shilling) are known - while this could be explained by the mint re-using the dies for business strikes, why didn't they do this for the half penny? Considering that they were unable to complete the requested order for the half penny due to die cracks, you'd think they'd welcome another die. I'm more inclined to believe that the proof-like pieces are in fact rejected proof strikes as they all have some sort of problem (uneven strike, die cracks, etc). Then there's the story of the shilling? Why weren't any produced? They had the dies ready (including a polished up proof die), the treasury requested shillings be produced, you'd think at least a proof would've been produced?
