The detail looks high AU anyway. If I had to guess from the pics, it would be AU55.

The color is suspect. May be a cleaned and re-toned piece.

I'm in the xf 45 to AU 50 range as the hair and talon detail show wear to me. Just curious of your price as I purchased the same date from ebay several years ago for a steal.

Another AU53-55 here. Could just be unattractive toning or, as Brad pointed out, non-original surfaces.

Not to hijack the thread, but can someone *briefly* explain why the toning indicates non-original surfaces? Is it because of the irregular pattern, or the color, or both? I can see it looks "off" but I couldn't explain physically/chemically why.

I am with the AU crowd, with suspect toning.

Natural toning lays down in a predictable pattern/color. Those of us who have dealt with this series can usually recognize when something doesn't look quite right ... such is the case here. The laydown just doesn't look "natural". This one looks "smoked" ... held over a smoldering cigarette or other smoke source. It is usually done to mask hairlines or other imperfections.

To the O.P. - With all this said it is not 100% assured that the toning is not natural. This usually requires a hands-on inspection to confirm.

thanks. I paid $89 which I thought was good considering XF goes for $108 and AU goes for $180 on Numismedia. I will inspect the toning better when it arrives. Overall though I like the detail of it and fits my budget.

is there anything that would make this appear to be a fake? thinking I got a good deal overall if it is in the AU 53-55 range

The coin does not appear to be a fake. I would put the coin at EF-45. The toning is suspect though.
