I'm new to the forum, so I apologize if this is in the wrong section. I'm a waitress and yesterday I received as a tip eight State Quarters that appear to be plated with gold (or something that looks like gold). Are they worth anything? Are they even real money? The states are Alabama, Georgia, New Hampshire, Iowa, Texas, Arizona, New York, and Colorado. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Good news and bad news. The good news is they are legal tender and worth 25 cents each. The bad news is they were plated by an aftermarket company after they left the mint. Most serious coin collectors stay away from these types of products. The gold that they are plated with is minuscule.

to the Community!

You can rest assured that you have real money, but their only added value is that they brought you here.

However, feel free to keep them as a novelty. If the collecting bug bites then you can always look at them as your beginning.

DD.
For free, you can't go wrong with those quarters. Be glad you aren't the one who probably paid an outrageous price for them. They'll most always be worth 25c, less inflation.
You're at the right place to learn about coins. There are experts in all aspects of it on this forum. Welcome.

Unfortunately, only 25 cents each, but if they get you to learn more about coins, priceless.

I am sure that a frustrated individual at the vending machine would gladly trade four of your "shiny" quarters for one wrinkled up, constantly rejected dollar bill.

Seriously, little no additional value to the informed numismatist...for the uninformed...the sky is the limit!

When my husband and I started collecting a couple of years ago, he got one of those in change. I looked all over the net to find out what it was. I finally took it to my local club where I learned that the thin electroplated gold would cost more to remove than the gold was worth.

But, like you, we didn't BUY them. So I have kept my 'gold' quarter along with all the other stuff I hoard.

I think it's cool to have -- since it was a find. I guess they were selling them on TV for some time. When they didn't sell them all, they got released back into the wild.

The recoverable gold on these is EXTREMELY small !
In parts per BILLION testing, the gold is almost not even THERE !

And the process for separating the gold off of the coin would not be a "cheap" one anyway. Therefore, beyond the "novelty" selling points and attractiveness (or lack-thereof), they just have no value whatsoever beyond face unfortunately.

Yeah, this is just a way to make the coins more attractive to potential buyers or traders......but as mentioned, in the " Coin World", they are an abomination for collectors. It's considered Post Mint damage ( PMD)

Folks NOT in the know, of course will pay more for these coins, and find out down the road that their money was spent foolishly.

So for you to receive them "as a tip" is just fine. Because that's all they are, are quarters worth .25 cents each. Someone must have found out that their "gold quarters" were valueless beyond face value and just decided to spend them as regular quarters.......nuthin' wrong with that ! .......

Even though they are worth face value, they do look pretty.

I remember seeing ads for them and they were selling for $5 each back in the day.

I hope you continue to collect coins and currency. It is a fun hobby and quite addicting.

Just a curiousity: are these actually still legal tender after plating?

Something tells me there should be legal limits on covering the surface of a coin.
But I guess painting a coin or dipping it in maple syrup is ok.

Surely you should be able to spend a wet coin near the beach!
