Hello, here is another coin I've recently inherited from my late grandfather. it's one of the many he left me and my fiance and I'm trying to get as many personal opinions and any input I can get from people with knowledge of these types of coins. Anyway, back to the main subject here, the coin I've got for you guys this time is a 1892-S Barber half dollar. the condition from my view is very good I think? I'm no expert nor do I have much experience with coins but from what information I've obtained through the internet it seems I have a decent find here. here are some photo's of the coin's backside and frontside, maybe you guys here on the coincommunity forums can help me get a better idea of the possible value and or grade/condition of this coin. any and all opinions/input are welcome and much appreciated! What would you grade this coin? what kind of shape is it in? what would you ask for in US dollars$ for this coin if it was you'res? I'm trying to get the most out of it, strictly just to feed my family and get us by maybe one more month. is it even worth much? iw as offered 350 @ one shop, and 275 at another. I was also told it was in "Very fine" condition from one of the guys. but I compared it to some of his coins and it seemed mine were in better shape. please any input and or personally opinion on this coin in grade and or value would be very much appreciated!! thank you so much for reading and looking(: more coins to come, and I need your help! (:*((:(:(:(:(:(:

I would agree with the assessment of very fine. Probably would rate a VF30 or 35, which is just under the higher XF grade. It also appears to be in original condition, so please don't clean it. Retail would run around $600 or so, so while the $350 offer is not terrible, you could probably do a bit better if you shopped around more. If you want to sell, you might consider sending it in to one of the grading services, as that generally makes coins easier to sell for a higher price, but at the disadvantage of costing $50 or so.

I think this coin is easily a EF-40. I know you said that money is tight but I think this coin would benefit from certification. Examples on Heritage certified in EF-40 sell for around $700.

Wow. really SD0ubl3Eagle? I was really hoping to hear something of that matter!! you really think it's an easy EF-40? I'm not really sure what that all means exactly other than its a grade for the coin. EF = Extra Fine? and 40 is the amount of points it scored? and also wharts the highest it could be? how far off is my coin from the next level of grading? thank you guys so much for the input on our coin, not that we have a general idea we are going to make a move. Do you guys have any reccomendations on where I could/should sell my coins? I was thinking about using ebay, or maybe just a local coin shop..i want to just maximize our profit. also what grading company should I use when gertting my coin certified? where and what place do I send it? I know nothing about certifying coins so any extra help/reccomendations are really appreciated. thabnk yiou again

Cheapest/best certification for your situation would be ANACS. Look 'em up on the web and read their info about how to submit coins. I'd estimate the value of this half at $500 for submission purposes. Ship the coin via insured first-class mail, or go Registered if you want extra security and higher cost. Your total outlay for grading and shipping (both ways) should be around $40 which you should recover due to the higher price a certified coin is likely to bring. You can list it on ebay with a minimum bid you would accept and see how it goes. If it gets that EF-40 grade from ANACS you might reasonably expect $500, maybe more. Subtract your ebay and Paypal fees and grading cost and you should net at least $400. Or, just shop your certified coin to different coin dealers and take their best offer. Easier, but probably less profit. By the way, your Grandpa had some nice coins apparently. Did he ever try to interest you in collecting?

It looks to be around VF-35 to EF-40 to me.

Yeah I agree with what's said here, it's basically a coin that mostly looks like EF-40 but the band under LIBERTY seems to not be raised and complete, which probably brings it down to VF35. You would have to check it under a loupe to be sure.

Well I've taken this coin to three different c coin shops here I'n Utah and all three gave me verbal grades for the coin and said its a border line vf35 - xf40. Three different offers, one being 350(after I send it in and get it certified), the other two were 275$ and 315$. I think I'm going to hold onto the piece and get it certified through anacs then ebay it.. Each of the three coin shops told me they don't see this coin in this condition very much and all three tried wheeling & dealing with me on the coin, constantly bumping their offers higher and higher and it got me really suspicious on why they were doing so.. I decided to just hold onto it lol.. I'm hoping to atleast pull five hundred.. The shops also told me they had numerous customers in search of this coin and people with it on their wish lists. Makes me wonder if I can get more than what I'm being offered. They also pointed out that a pro certify ing company may grade the coin higher than what they are because its hard to Tell with my coin. Thanks again everyone here appreciate your help:):)

My Suggestion, Get enough posts here and post it on our auction forum. Have the start price at the max dealer offer. I'm sure i'll be bidding :)
To get enough posts: Start posting pictures of all the other coins. You'll hit 250 posts in a week or two.
