I found this 2001 Cent roll hunting tonight. It is missing the copper plating in the center on the obverse and reverse. the center of the coin is Concave from the Obverse and Convex from the reverse. There is no visual sign of damage to the coin that would cause the to be shaped as it is. The rim on the right side of the coin from both the obverse and reverse is slightly raised edge. I noticed some minor Machine Doubling on both the Obv and Rev. It is hard to see the concave and convex from the pics. I was unable to capture it with a edge shot as well. When placed on a flat surface...the coin definitely has a wobble.

Any Idea what might of caused this. I'm still in the learning process...just not sure if this is something that is PMD or something else.

Thank you in advance for all opinions.

I really need to get better lighting. Sorry for the shadows...taking the pictures at my desk with just wall mounted track lighting and holding the camera in hand. I will have to take the time to set up a station for taking pics some day soon.

Interesting. The plating seems to be on some of the high points on both sides. Not sure what that means.

I noticed that also. I figured if it was sitting in something that had removed the plating..it would have removed the plating from the high spots as well. You can see the plating remains on some of the lettering and parts of the crown while it is missing around the letters & crown. I thought it was unusual.

It kinda looks like it was heated with the heat coming from the obverse side?

I would also agree that it was heated at one point, whatever happened it is PMD.

Hmmm...that is a good possibility. I guess that copper has a lower melting point then zinc. I will keep it in my "HUH?" folder as a learning example. :)

Thank you very much for the input.

my cent worth

looks like it has been heated from the obverse side
is it concave at all?
zinc has a lower melt about 400C to coppers 1100C
low centralize heat most likely

Don't look like it has burn spots, so I'm not so sure heat is the culprite. If it was heated the whole penny would discolour, would it not. I'm no expert, but a plating problem seems more of a possible answer. Cool find none the less.

OK cladhunter13...Here is my 2 cents worth...!

I colourized the picture of your coin...Take a look where the arrows are pointing, and look at the top/edge of the coin...Both same colour. To me there has been something added to the coin, because the parts where the arrows are and the untouched parts of the coin ARE the same colour...Wear and tear have removed what was added to the coin and the composition is back to where it was before some one affected it.

Just my opinion
