Hi all,

I always confuse some terms they use on coins.
What is the different between "Fine Silver" and "Pure Silver"?
"Brilliant Fine Silver" and "Proof Fine Silver"?
"Finish: Proof" and "Finish: Specimen"?
Thanks

Proof = frosted finish against mirrored background
Specimen = prettier than circulation :)

Fine Silver = the terminology the RCM adopted to refer to 9999 pure silver
Pure Silver = usually means 999 silver
(but these two terms aren't really official in the numismatic community I don't think. So, stuff like "Brilliant Fine Silver" is really just marketing more than descriptive {to me at least})

I'll wait for valiant collectors to answer those questions... Charlton lists at least 13 different finishes, not accounting for metal purity...

The RCM really can leave a person with bewildering options... No clear cut "mint set or proof set" options here! Maybe you want a "specimen" set, and how about an "Oh Canada" set - are the coins in this set the same as the coins in a regular "uncirculated" set? ;-)))

and of course there is always Sterling Silver, which is 92.5% silver and 7.5% something else (often copper). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_silver

It still looks very nice but I don't like the fact that as sterling silver (92.5%) is taxable while 99.9% & 99.99% silver is not.

^^^ I'm convinced the tax exception is the reason the RCM has tended to offer fine silver in recent years.

The government can't possibly make a lot off coin sales. But, they sure could give the business a shot in the arm by eliminating the taxes. The investment potential would skyrocket.
