Just curious.. Do dealers get better prices than the general public on new releases?

Dealers tend to offer most new releases at the same price as the mint.
If they didn't buy at a lower cost, it would be an extremely poor business model.
That said, I wonder what is the general percentage 'wholesale' cost. Anyone?

Didn't get an exact number from the dealer I frequent, but it ain't much. 20% at the very most I'm guessing, likely around 10-15%. This is one of the reasons why you won't find the 20 for 20 at dealers for $20 often if at all. $2-$4 in profit is not worth their time, especially since dealers likely had to pay for shipping (from mint to their store) and packaging if it is an online dealer

Its my understanding its 10%. I know for sure Canada Post gets them 10% below listed price. The dealers get free shipping from the mint as well.

Thanks for the replies. I was wondering how some dealers are making any money listing new releases on ebay for the same price that's available on mint.ca I figured that after ebay and paypal fees (approx 11%) they either had to be getting them at a lower cost or they're losing their shirts!

I'm guessing they sell on ebay as a 'lost leader', then getting the purchaser to visit their own web-site and possibly purchase some of the more lucrative (larger profit) offerings. I've heard of other dealers (motorcycle dealers) who refuse to do the ebay thing, mostly due to the fees associated with it. "not worth their time" compared to dealing directly with the public or on their own websites.

Although dealers suffer those 10% losses from ebay, I am sure they love those 200-300% gains on coins like Ladybugs, steel birds, crystals, etc. Dealers always tend to get more coins of popularity. They aren't stupid, they know their market. They know not to go crazy buying proof sets and proof silver dollars (coins that depreciate). You could make arguments that deals are solely responsible for inflating the prices of coins such as the Ladybugs by hoarding all those coins. Kind of funny how all the dealers still have some of those coins, you would think they would be out of them by now.

I just saw an invoice from at post office for RCM coins. They were all discounted 15% to the post office. Nice little margin

But, they have to put in the orders before popularity is known. By the time something is known to be really hot, it is a sell-out, and dealers are in the same boat as a everyone else. What they can do is make reasonable guesses. And if the coin is a sell-out, they immediately start jacking up the prices. In that respect, ebay is their buddy. It is giving them fast feedback on what price the market will accept.

PO's employess have very little or know knowledge about Mint coin. (I mean the sale associates or customer services at the front desk.) Some people even do not know what the Glow in the dark and the bumble bee coins are.(very popular coin at this time.) Some have very poor customer services. They really do not care if you want to buy or not. They might do well with their everyday jobs - the postal services. But for the coin sale, I do not think so. CP should have their sale staffs some training sessions about Coins to get customer satisfaction.

yes and no... sure it will be better if I stop by a CP and the person there actually know what I'm talking about....
but then again, it will lead more to hoarding, Heck, I know a lot of them already hoard more popular coins such as Bee or Dinos. :(

Not easy to get even 1 (do not think about hoard) for those 2 coins at POs if you are just a public collector as me. Unless you work there or you know someone who wokrs there so they can text you and let you know when they have stock, or they can just put aside for you to pick up. They told me the quantity comes to each PO location is very small. I tried almost a month, but not even get one. Might be you all can try stay there 7 days/week during the open hours, see if you can get one?

At my postal outlet, the manager there sits down with me and asks, "what coins should I order?" I don't collect NCLT, so I try to help out with popular stuff, but that itself can depend on the demographics of the neighbourhood.
Coin dealers pay the same premium as collectors, however, when ordering sealed boxes of circulation strikes from Winnipeg.
