I don't know if this is a very rare find or not but I am happy.

Is this a common variety?

There are many different types of the 1982 cent.
Zinc, copper, lge. date, sm. date P/D mintmarks etc.
Not rare by any means but the least common one is the 82 zinc
sm. date philly. That one also has a very nice DDR if you can find one with it. "They" say that the 82-D sm. date copper cent does not exist. I still check every one I find though with either my scale or little hand made balance beam thingy. Also check all the 83's for a copper. At one time "They" also said that it did not exist.

Here are the seven types.

1982 Copper, Large Date
1982 Copper, Small Date
1982 Zinc, Large Date
1982 Zinc, Small Date
1982-D Copper, Large Date
1982-D Zinc, Large Date
1982-D Zinc, Small Date

There are only actual mintage figures on just the P and D's
total and not on the planchets (i.e.) copper or zinc and or lge./sm. dates.

The 1982 D small date is uncommon to find roll searching. I save all I find and put them in their own tube.

All of the small date 1982 cents are a little more difficult to find than the large date examples, but none of them are scarce enough as of yet to bother keeping them and storing them. Circulated examples of all seven business strike varieties are still worth face value and probably will be for a number of years to come.

It is only the uncirculated coins that have premium value, and the 1982D small date is of only modest premium value in BU rolls. The small date Philadelphia minted coins are the only ones that bring hefty premiums in BU rolls.
