What would do that? My first thought was some sort of hot tool that softened the zinc inside, but it would be discolored... So it has to be some kind of mechanical damage, but...

It's just post mint damage, nothing special about it at all. Somebody hit it with something a couple times, or it got crushed in something like a vise.

This is no doubt post mint damage. There's nothing there indicating anything otherwise.
