What would do that? My first thought was some sort of hot tool that softened the zinc inside, but it would be discolored... So it has to be some kind of mechanical damage, but...

It's just post mint damage, nothing special about it at all. Somebody hit it with something a couple times, or it got crushed in something like a vise.

Little iffy on the PMD if it was a vise job or it got hit wheres the zinc?
