~1992 to 2008, so about 16 years
Missed a couple good coins in that time, and a lot of cheap silver and gold.

8 months... Although I had been given 300 world coins before so I just tried to catalog them for the 8 months... I'm still not done sorting over 1 1/2 years later..

Now is the time to start an intensive study of variety and error coins. They can be inexpensive to buy out of dealer's junk bins, and can absorb a great deal of your numismatic energy.
There are lots of CCF members who are ready to help you with your new addiction!
For a period of about 15 years when paying my mortgage was taking all of my money, I was into searching for unusual foreign coins from junk bins. One of the results of this is that I was able to build what is arguably the World's largest collection of different types of machine struck SQUARE coins, a lot of them bought for around ten cents each.
Still a lot of fun, when my greatest numismatic love has always been for ancient coins!

ummm 3 weeks.. Hey umm Sel_69l would any of your square coins be Australian pre-decimal types? I'd love to be able to get my hands on some of them, problem is the mortgage as you said. It has to come first. I do believe I have it on the ropes though.

Not that lucky. The only square pattern penny that I have was cut from the centre of a copper cored nickel plated medallion. The right size and weight, but after cutting, the copper centre is obvious.
The value of my square coin collection is probably more than the sum total of it's parts. Nevertheless, almost all of them are common. I just had a lot of fun putting them together.
Actually, I know a guy who has a complete set of pattern square pennies and halfpennies. (Not the silver ones, though). Used to be a coin dealer, advertised regularly in the Australian Coin Review. Very old gentleman now. We are members of the same car club.
When THAT lot comes up for auction, the whole of the Australian numismatic market will know....!
R-Dawkins: What I am saying is that you can have a lot of fun with numismatics, without spending any significant money.
The more valuable coins in my collection may have to be disposed of before or after I die, but I would prefer to have my square coins buried WITH me!

Very sporatic over the years. Sometimes going to 4 coin shows a Month. Other times not paying attention to coins at all. Just to many things to do around here.

i agree you dont have to spend money to enjoy numismatics.. what I've been doing lately is cataloging the coins in the junk collection and taking higher quality scans of the first coins I got (when I didnt really know how to take proper pictures and stuff)... its just frustrating I guess when you have gaps in your series and you see a coin for sale but cant buy it..
ive always liked those australian square pattern pennies but have never seen or held one.. probably never will. lol
