I'm torn between Extra Fine and About Uncirculated on this coin. I'd appreciate your opinions on it. Thanks.

Okay...so it maybe just the lighting and the way you're taking the pictures, but that alkaline look tends to say the coin has been harshly cleaned and/or messed with chemically.

Prethen,

I use my scanner for the pics - maybe that's what gives my coins the look you see. Do all my coins have a bad look to you?

Maybe the brightness is turned up too much. You might have to experiment. Does the coin look like the photo when seeing it in-hand? If not, can you adjust the brightness/contrast/colors in a program like PhotoShop or PaintshopPro or something else to get it like what it really looks like?

Bubba, I'm about as new to computers as I am to coin collecting. Up until a few months ago, I didn't even know what dpi stood for, and, frankly, until some of the members, more or less, took me by the hand, and walked me through the scanning process my pics were nothing more than fuzzy images. I've come a ways, but you and the members will have to bear with me until I get better at this scanning stuff.

I increase the dpi, the contrast, and the sharpness as well as decrease the brightness to better show the detail. Maybe I'm doing too much, or too little.

No the coin doesn't look "washed out" in hand. It still has some of the mint luster - weak, but there.

I can't say if it has been dipped in a solution, but, under 20x it doesn't appear to have any of the fine diagonal scratches that are indicative of a harsh cleaning.

Bubba?

Maybe the coins are completely fine (actually XF++)!

I think I'd have to go with EF on this one, Ralph, obverse-limited. The reverse is AU, but I'm seeing just a little too much wear on the cap to be comfortable with AU.

Dave,

Due to the "digs" in the cap, and the other numerous circulation marks, I believe it might grade EF-40. That sound about right to you?

Prethen - "Bubba?" - just an expression I use frequently. Nothing derogatory intended.

I'm not willing to draw the 40-45 differentiation with the pics here - my leaning is towards the high side, but it'd require figuring out how good the strike originally was. The digs aren't in a critical place, and the marks are about normal for the grade.

Figure it EF42.
