Think it might be an altered 44?

Who in their right mind would buy that as a 1914-D with all that convenient damage around the first 4.

The buyer deserves it. Looks like the alteration was done with a pen knife 3 minutes before the photo was taken.

Even a perfectly done alteration is easy to spot. At least they could have attempted to hide the fresh blood.

Filling this date is killing me. Just can't get over the fact that I can get a really nice 31-S for a buck and a quarter, but this date in sad shape is even more.

On a positive note, maybe I now have a buyer for my 1799 cent.

You know what the funny thing is, ebay makes it rough for honest sellers with all the fees (who have small margins), but makes it perfect for people that counterfeit and just try to rip dumb people off. A counterfeiter has low costs and really high margins... they dont get hurt by the percentage based fees, and, they really benefit from the massive amount of traffic ebay gets. Eventually an idiot comes by and they win... its just a matter of time....

ebay really needs to step it up or try to do something given how much they charge people. Hire more experts to take these listings down. Or maybe they could start by forcing sellers to have a return policy on any raw coin. I mean, it would really improve their reputation along the way anyway.

How much more obvious can the alteration be? Short of listing it as altered.

I can't believe someone paid $99.00 for a coin in very obvious condition that it was altered to look like a 14D.

I've seen some altered ones that actually wasn't too bad but, this one really stands out.

If one single person that took 10 minutes to whine about it, took 1 minute to report it instead, it would have been removed within hours.

Not even a good alteration. I too wonder why no one reported this as it was very obvious.

Notice how the supplied photo put shadows in the area around where the VDB would show. Very convenient.

Maybe the seller threw in the pen knife as a free gift for the buyer?
