I've recently acquired a Canadian cent dated 1859, stamped or countermarked on the reverse in capital letters
L. C. BARBEAU
COURTIER
(BROKER)
MONTREAL
CANADA

I think the coin is almost extremely fine, though the head is almost obliterated by the impact of the countermarks. The lettering is in perfect condition.

1. Is this a recognised issue of the period ?

2. Was it done for advertising or for a different purpose (what) ?

3. What did L. C. BARBEAU do or sell ?

4. Is there an online catalogue of such items ?

5. What is the approximate value ?

trout1105,
It's not for sale at the moment, and I'm not qualified to sell through this forum.
In any case, I like to find out as much as I can about unusual coins before I pass them on - can you answer my questions please ?
My fascination is with the coins and their history, not just to make a quick profit.
