Hi All, I found this in my change. It's split right down the middle. Found about 20 years ago .. but I thought I might see if anyone knows what it's worth before I put it on ebay ?

Very very nice. I think purple penny or markn would be able to tell you about value the best.

Oh.. I should mention too .. that I have a 1973 20cent piece that makes a very odd sound, like clunk, when you drop it on a table.
It has a crack line running around the edge like it is separated .. but it has not actually come apart.
Opinions would be welcome on the probable estimated worth of this coin too.

Question; how did you find both separate halves together? or were the halves still loosely joined?

Yes they were joined by a very thin bit of metal. You can see it at the bottom of the left half.
I just pulled and they fell apart. I probably should have left them together but I really wanted to see the inside.
My only excuse is I was much younger !

Nice error coin you have there!! I see one was recently on ebay, a 50 cent as yours and got $91-ish I don't think I'm allowed to post links, being a newbie...but put in 'split planchet' in the ebay completed listings search, and you'll see more such coins of a similar type.

Thanks for the information. I had no idea what to look for on ebay. I see a dealer wanted $400 for one too ! Wow .... Not bad for change for an ice cream !

That's wierd...I just pulled them up... In ebay, go search for "split planchet" & search Then go to "Advanced" on the right hand side, which will give you more options, tick "Completed Listings" & search

Seem $100 is a good estimate seeing one sold recently for that. Not bad for 50c thats for sure.

It seems the RAM had a problem with lamination when rolling of the strip, prior the the blanks being punched out. This problem is more often found with the ten cents and Twenty Cents coins around this date. I have two parts of a 20 cent coin. I got it from pocket change, while the two halves were still intact. They almost fell apart when I gently tied to split them.
