The following is going to prove that I have far too much free time. Actually, that's not the case, but I'm sure it will seem that way. Today I went to my bank and bought another roll of George Washington Presidential dollars. I bought them not for my collection, or to give them away, but to spend them, and see what sort of a reaction I would get. I visited 10 stores, including Walmart, City Market, Conoco Service station, two convenience stores, Safeway, KayMart, McDonald's, Taco Bell, a restaurant for lunch, and a restaurant for dinner. Here were the reactions. 1. "These are cool!" 2. "Where did you get it? I like it." 3. "The main thing I see is that it's about the size of a quarter. I bet a lot of people will think it's a quarter." 4. "It'll be just like the Susan B. Anthonys, and it will never circulate." 5. "I'm going to buy this one and take it home." 6. "You're the third person today who brought one of these in." 7. "This is different." 8. Three clerks/waitresses made no comment. Edited by Gary Burke 02/22/2007 7:11 pm

That's interesting Gary. I really wish these would become widely accepted and circulate. I picked up some to collect and to spend.

Interesting experiment. Now go try it at your local Post Office branch. I tried to spend a Sac about two years ago (I think) at the P.O., and the clerk refused it because (hang on ...) "I don't have a slot for that thing in my cash drawer".

"I don't have a slot in my cash drawer." That's priceless! Would that be akin to finding a gold nugget and refusing to pick it up because you didn't have a pocket?

I'm not sure it's legal to refuse legal tender when offered for a purchase. However, it reminds me that as a Professional Instigator and Agitator (PITA for short), I need to pick up a roll of dollar coins and try to spend them. I love to demonstrate peoples' ignorance when they refuse a coin (or two dollar bill) because they don't know what it is.

I'm sure these will go over just as fantastic as all the rest of the little baby dollars. Our commuter train conductors don't want them since they have coin chagers that don't have a place for them. A waitress at a restaurant I frequent said PLEASE don't give me one of those stupic things. At a local flea market I was told they are not real, don't you have real money. Of course he thinks real money is a Peso. I just can't wait for the kids in school chem classes to start Copper plating the Washington quarters to look like the new baby Washington Dollars. According to the news reports, these new dollars are just as well accepted and used as the other stupid previous ones.

I have yet to see one. Tried 3 different banks and nothing. They all told me it was pot luck if they get any. I'll run across one eventually. I just don't see these coins being popular to anyone but collectors. People just don't like things to change.

Hey everyone, I'm sort of new. I joined a little over a year ago and posted a couple of times. Then for some reason I stopped. Not sure why. Anyway, I've been re-lurking for the past couple of weeks and hope to jump in more permanently. I did my civic duty tonight and spent some new dollars at the grocery store. The check-out girl looked at them then started looking for a manager. When she didn't see one she just said "I guess it's alright." I told her according to the US Mint it was (with a smile). I tried to small talk educate her while she counted out my change. I told her it was a new program similar to the State Quarters. She'd never heard of them either. *Sigh* Anyway, this is great forum. I've learned lots from you folks. Thanks.

I'll be in gunshot range of a bank tomorrow. Without doing a Google or digging into the Mint's site, does anyone know how many dollar coins come in a roll? I'm guessing 20, but that's only a guess. I need the dollar coin inventory to mess with peoples' minds.

I don't like th dollar that much. The color is not very eye-catching. The figure is too big.

Not sure "gunshot" and "bank" should be used in the same sentence... However, I do like the phrase quite a bit. As Gary stated, there are 25 in a roll, and along Ty's reply, let me know if you need any. I plan on picking up some rolls tonight, woohoo, and I'm sending off a roll to Danny today or tomorrow.
