hard to tell if there is a date or not in the picture. I thought even pattern coins had dates.

no date and no USA on the obverse
It might be a pattern, but I personally don't think its from a US Mint.

yeah, the card says copy, but didn't see it noted on the coin.

Thanks Fuzzy317. I didn't buy it. I figured if it was worth picking up I could go back.

A pattern 1856 for $45? A real one is in the tens of thousands. Probably a fake or something

It says copy on the holder. This one without date or copy stamped on the coin probably came in from China. Some of the private mints are still making these also. They sell from them in the $13-20 range but do carry the word "copy" stamped on them. http://royaloakmint.com/

Imo--it cannot both be a "pattern" and a copy. It's just a knockoff--and certainly not worth $45.

This site was sent to me. Site not allowed. But, it does show this particular design.

(1856) P1C Flying Eagle cent, Judd-179, Pollock-207, Low R.7

The design is the regular Flying Eagle cent motif on the obverse and the Agricultural Wreath reverse from 1857-58, but there is no date or other legends, save for the denomination ONE CENT in the center reverse. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Pollock notes that the obverse eagle is a "direct copy of the eagle featured on the Gobrecht dollars dated 1836 to 1839." This pattern could just as easily be called a "Gobrecht cent," crediting the obverse's original designer, Christian Gobrecht, rather than merely describing the design. Examples were struck in both copper and copper-nickel, with the latter somewhat rarer--but both are rare. The dated Judd-180 is the R.1 1856 Flying Eagle cent pattern, a high-mintage production (for a pattern, at least) that is collected alongside the regular-issue series. USPatterns.com reports more than a dozen are known of this copper undated variety.
