I am very seriously considering collecting the Chines Panda coins in silver only. Would appreciate any opinions as to whether this is a good area or not. I think they are beautiful coins and would really enjoy looking at them. However, do not have huge finances so funds would be limited. Is this a good investment or not.

Hi Luskie,

To be honest, I know very little about the Chinese Pandas. The only advice I would give you, is to be very careful where you buy them from. Choose a reputable dealer if you are going to be putting much money into these coins, and be very wary of buying them from a Chinese ebay seller.

You can go into a coin dealer's store and have a talk with him, get a feel for how he treats new customers. Or you can find an online dealer. Either way, find someone you trust, someone you are comfortable with, and then try to stick with them.

Once you establish a relationship with a specific dealer, you will find that they will go out of their way to be helpful for you. It will probably take several months to build a rapport, but it will be worth it. Hope this information helps.

Both my wife and I collect the Panda along with bullion coins from Australia, U.S., Canada, Great Britain. I (we) like silver, the weight and feel of it, and LARGE coins so the bullion coins fit our desires and collecting habits.
The Panda changes designs every year which is a huge plus for the Chinese program. I would suggest you buy from an established dealer for each new release and buy it early in the year. The Panda seems to hold its value well (I really don't care one way or another as they are silver) and older issues are extrememly pricey. Take great care when acquiring older issues as they are heavily counterfeited. I (we) have purchased Panda's off of ebay but paid very close attention to where the coin is coming from and watched FEEDBACK closely! We never buy out of China or Asia! Always from the U.S. or Canada and occassionally from a European dealer.
While we have bullion from many countries I really prefer the Panda and Kangaroo (Australia) over all others. (They too change designs annually) I might add if finances are limited you can always look into half ounce bullion coins, although not as readily available, they are struck by many countries.

Luskie: Snooba and Crystalk both have genuine points about the Chinese Pandas! I too collect them in both Gold and Silver and believe that they are a good investment, long term. The changes in design is quite nice and does make them highly collectible as far as limited designs, value, etc.

Canadian ML's are also a good investment as the bullion content is slightly higher however, the design get's a little monotonous..QEII and the Maple Leaf!

I have started a collection of Chinese Panda's for my wife and she really enjoys getting another one even though she is not a coin collector she just likes getting a new coin (which is a start I guess). I started it for her so maybe we could enjoy the hobby together and maybe she could share the passion I feel about my coins and even though it hasn't reached that level as of yet I still have hope
