http://www.ebay.com/itm/221053726892?ru=http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html%3F_sacat=0&_nkw=221053726892&_rdc=1 I always emphasize never buy this coin raw, especially ebay. Diagnostics could be faked. Having said that, I don't like the 7's, especially that first one...looks to have been fashioned from a 9. Thoughts? swcoin.ecrater.com

To me the last 7 looks to be the problem, it's larger than the rest of the date. Not a coin I would buy.

The first 7 is smaller than the second 7. The guy has almost 2000 good feedbacks but even at that I would avoid this coin. It just doesn't feel right.

There were more red flags too. Specified as an 1891 & I did notice the size of the second 7 as well echizento.

Looks like a normal 1877 to me. The 7's always look like that. That being said, I will have to crack my 77 out of a slab when I buy it.

This is a PCGS MS-66 coin, 7's are the same size. This coin, which is graded PCGS MS-66 Red, is part of the legendary PCGS Registry Set "Red Copper Collection," formed by copper collector Stewart Blay

Diagnostically, the second 7 should be slightly lower than the first...that looks fine here. I don't like the shape of the first one...hmmm? Might just be the photo too. Nevertheless, my gut would say avoid.
I've seen the above coin before, it's simply insane!

My first impression is that the coin is good. The size of the second 7 does appear a bit exaggerated but it seems the lower the grade the bigger those digits appear. I'm not sure comparing it to a super sharp MS66 is the way to go. Compare it to something like this:

Not that I would purchase it without some assurances, but I think it has a chance of being authentic

Well the ebay coin does appear to closely match your coin upstate. The ebay coin also is a type 1 with feather pointing between the I C. So it can't be an altered date from 1898 because those would be a type 2 with feather pointing between the C A. It just might be genuine, but I still would not feel good buying it.

I could attempt to compare this coin to my Snow guide for 1877, but since Rick Snow is a CCF member now...perhaps he'll drop by to comment?

Fake or not I just can't see taking a chance with that much money for something on ebay.
