@t_y, there was news that the old style 2012 coins where being recalled or pulled from circulation. I'm not sure how accurate that info is but thats the word I keep hearing.

Quote: Guys, don't get excited. There are more than 3 million "old" 2012 twoonies around source for that number? and 3 million minted? or 3 million in circulation? there is a HUGE difference. the early, non security type, were recalled. anything ordered by dealers/collectors made it out into the wild, any initially sent to a bank were sent back to the mint and recycled. so the only number that matters is the difference between how many were minted and how many made it out alive. I've found countless new security types in circulation, and in the last few weeks about 10 of the 1812 type in customer wrapped bank rolls (seems about as common as the security issue), but not a single "old type". if the numbers minted of each type were similiar (between 3-5 million of each) I would expect to find a similiar number in circulation. it just isn't happening. same can be said for the 2012 "type 1" loonie. so while I am not getting "excited" it is definately something to watch out for. I am not sure how much info the mint releases about how many coins it reclaims, but am hopeful in one of their reports for 2012 it will give an idea as to how many survived.

My numbers came from the Mint. It refers to mintage. I have absolutely no knowledge of any recall. What I do know is that banks were not instructed to send the twoonies back yet. This will happen in 2013.

I have been looking for 2012 old style loon and toon. Haven't seen one yet.

I was wondering why they would wait a year to recall a coin... is this normal?

Quote: This will happen in 2013. along with all the non- multiply issues. that is all part of their alloy recovery program. (any pre multi-ply canadian circulation coinage is going to get pretty thin in the coming years) while the loon/twoon type 1 would fall under this by default I am still inclined to believe the early $1 & $2 coins for 2012 had their own set of circumstances above and beyond. they just aren't 'out there'

its basicly a make work project for the mint, there has never been a large counterfeting problem with these coins.

The issue was never counterfeiting - it was metal prices: nickel is too expensive to be on a coin. Once they are redesigning why not include security features?
Remember: the Mint strike coins for more than 70 countries. These clients like to know they are being served by top notch technical suppliers and may have requirements unknown to us.

I wonder if that Brinks shipment accident in northern Ontario affected the supply of older $1 and $2 coins in general circulation. That was millions of dollars (face value). The timing of the accident was before the release of the newer plated coinage.
Food for thought...

There are a few major distribution hubs in the country. That truck had the whole supply for one of the hubs. The accident may be part of the shortage reason but I think the availability of 2011 coins is the main reason - they are being distributed first.
Commemorative coins get to the market quicker - there are other distribution tactics the Mint uses, including the special wrapping and special delivery to selected points of sale/trade (coffee shops, little banks, etc).

Nice topic we got going here lol. I think time will tell, as for me, I've had alot of tonnies come my way, even checked with the tellers where I work and non available. Majority are 1812 and the Regular Security Feature Coins but I'm still keeping my eye out.

I really think they should have taken their time with the problem occurring around the rims of the new toonies. The RCM is a world-class mint, right up there with Britain, Australia, and the U. S. of A. The RCM innovates. Why they would get lazy on quality control is beyond me, probably to satisfy the demand for cash (the toonie is the best denomination for coffee, tips, and parking, amongst many other expenses). I doubt people even check their toonies for counterfeits anyways. Ever since getting 2 in my change in under a 3-month timespan I'm always checking them for outright Montreal 2005 fakes. But I check mainly by sound, color, and weight. I've still only found 1 "old-style" 2012 toonie and I'm holding onto it for years to come. I just hope that the 2013 toonies are up to better standards.

I don't hold my breath regarding quality. After much more than 400 million twoonies struck since 1996, I can see the same issues recurring over and over - but I don't complain - the bulk of my collection is build in these issues :-).
If you speak with the production guys at the Mint you will realize that if the coin is within the tolerances than the product is good. No one there look at coins the way we do. No one in the Mint cares about grade or strike-perfection; they only care about outputting widgets. A few million of them PER DAY.

I love it if the mint decided not to melt them but to pop the cores and make the cores worth 10 cents and the ring $1 or $2. Melting them makes little sense at this point because they're only worth a few cents.
