Speaking of getting loonies in change, I thought I'd share an odd conversation I had today that has me shaking my head. I was talking to a guy -- a coin collector no less, and one who should know how to look over a coin carefully -- who said he had just found a 2013 loonie in change. I said "You mean the new 2012", and he said "No, I got the 2012 a few months back, this was a 2013." I wasn't having it but he insisted. The guy didn't look like he was joking around, he honestly thought he had a coin which hasn't been minted yet. Seriously? I couldn't convince him otherwise and he didn't have it on him that he could show it to me. Yes, there are two varieties this year but any that I've seen clearly read "2012".

Sometimes the loonies you see aren't always found in your spare change.

i might just have to steal that for my sig , thanks for the laughs

as for the mint sets, are the "uncirculated" sets a specimen finish? (looks like it on the mint.ca site)

for $25 you get the last year penny, the old loon and twoon and a fairly low mintage 50 cent piece - not bad!

Ok so now I'm really excited about this. I am definitely going to get my buddy, who works in the cage at the bank to keep an eye out for these coins.

at the post office today and noticed the mint sets including the wedding (and one other) quarter also include the old style 2012 loon and twoon. no 50 cent piece in the set, $19.95 (penny, nickel, quarter, loon, twoon).

If you wait until February next year, you can probably buy that same set for 40% discount from the same post office.

Yes! I scored an "old-style" 2012 toonie today! Put it straight into a flip. Haven't seen the 1812 yet.

i think your best bet right now to get the loonie and toonie in old style is to go to a shoppers drug mart or store that sells event sets and get the wedding, or baptism sets! they sell for 15$ and have 1c, 5c, 25c, 50c, 1$, and 2$ in all old style!

(2)1812's in a customer wrapped roll from the bank last week.

And I could be mistaken but I thought the wedding and baptism sets did not have the 50 cent piece? Just the year set?

i have a couple sets of 2012 with the old toonie and loonie. Maybe I should pickup a couple more because it also has a nice 2012 penny! although the penny has been hoarded to death and probably more out there then previous years just for that reason.

Try going the the main branches of the banks. I've heard that might be the best spot to find them.

A few notes from here and there on this thread.

Guys, don't get excited. There are more than 3 million "old" 2012 twoonies around and (not sure) more than 5 million of the security type. I have no information on the mintage of the 1812 yet but I doubt it will be small.

Since 2011, uncirculated sets are assembled with circulation coins, meaning, those struck in Winnipeg. If you only want coins they do not worth, if you collect packaging, go for it (however Charlton stopped listing them as unc sets). Note that ALL hockey and souvenir sets (since at least 2008) are assembled with circulation coins.

2013 dies will be loaded from November on. I doubt they were made yet.

2013 twoonies: there will be a flood of them because the old style twoonies will start to be removed from circulation.

Rest in Peace

Hi guys

My boy brought me home the new 1812 toonie from his change at Tim Horton's, so there must be lots out there in circulation.

By the way, the Mint is still making a mess of the rim with their rim die punching...Not nice looking at all...!
