Can someone confirm to me if there where 2 different types of Tonnies for 2012. I happen to have a plain 2012 Toonie as opposed to the Security One and is it a rare coin to find? Thanks guys.

Yes, there are two types. Don't know about rarity, but I haven't yet seen one of the "old style" toonies.

Thanks mberteig for the quick response. I havent really seen any of the usual looking toonie up until now. Was wondering if they where ment to be struck since this has a logo as the security proof toonie does not.

Hang onto the old style. Far fewer were released than the new ones. (From an inside source)

I have also not seen an "old style" 2012 toonie in regular change. That 1812 commem will drown it out even further.

Thanks guys. Never seen the 1812 version. I hope someone can post a pic of the 1812.

I've never seen the 1812 version either, but I've got the old style one in my mint set (still sealed). I'm looking to get one in change though, so I can slip it into my collection proper.

"old" style was struck, made available for a short time to dealers and some sent to banks, then immediately recalled, scrapped and replaced with the ones with new security features.
not sure how many made it out, but it might turn out to be VERY few. (hoping the mint releases #s stating how many were minted and how many were recovered)
definately worth holding onto. I dont think you will ever find one in change
PS, same thing happened with loonies.

I've got four old-style loonies and toonies in mint uncirculated sets. I keep hoping I'll find some in circulation, but it seems very unlikely at this point. If they were even at a few percent of the new style, I probably would have come across them by now.

wert, ya, they did the same recall/reissue on both the loon and twoon. ebay right now either one is $6-$18 each, and usually an easy $100+ for a mint roll. i can only see that going up. (i only managed to get 6 of each before the price started to climb)

And yet for now you can still buy the old-style mint sets for $24.95. I can see where this is going real fast. Buy them up while you can; they aren't going to be available long. Good for everyone who's already latched onto a few because I agree with you, wade, they're going nowhere but up.

I feel that this is different than, say, the ladybug coin (TULIP!!) because this is circulation coinage.
