Gold is so malleable that any gold plating on coins probably costs less than a penny or two. So if the two silver pieces are the same size and weight and one has the gold plating for decoration, get which ever one you like as the melt value is going to be the same.
Now sometimes the Gold plated coins have a lower mintage that could demand a higher collector price in the future. But as far as melt value goes the amount of gold is negligible.

I have a complete set (all matching serial #'s) of 50 pcs. of America's Greatest events 1oz bars all 24k gold plated w/ only 5000 sets made. I've searched but can't find a complete set. I feel these will carry a premium over melt. JMO

Some of the selectively gold plated coins are stunning but most of them are just bling. Most of the gold plated offerings are just marketing strategies and have nothing to do with enhancement of the coins basic design. However the ones that are done well are most certainly worth the premium paid

@ Bibo: not worth it even at $65. It's worth a bit over bullion value by my books. With silver at bit below $30, I wouldn't pay more than $40-45 for this coin. The gold plating means little aside from aesthetics.

Gold plating is part marketing strategy and part art. Buy if you like it. As far as ex Mint after market performance is concerned, gold plated products just take their place in the market with any other NCLT product.

@poboxw, Thank you! IMO, Mint made Gold Plating for this coin for people celebrated the Winning of Canadian Hockey Team. Reading the Mint description with the 10000 mintage, I think these coin should be sold out quick and rare to find at this moment 2012. (Coin released on 2010). Because of lots of Canadian Hockey Fans in the Canada and World Wide. But I am wrong. It is still available at some dealers website, and I find 1 at CP today. And on ebay, it is just a little bit higher than the issue price. ($10 bucks) Confusing about the coin trend?

Gold plating can be cheap.
My parents had all of the taps in their (then) new house hard gold plated for less than $500, when gold was around $280 / ounce. The plating after 20 years shows no sign of wearing thin. Even at 80 microns thick, the total weight of the plating would have been very little for the plating to work out at a profit for the manufacturer.
It would cost much more in production costs than the value of the gold, to have a coin plated with the stuff.
Gold plated silver coin? Total PM value is silver value only, for all practical purposes. Just looks good, as trout1105 has demonstrated.
