While I was on a trip a couple weeks ago, I met a older lady. Of course during the conversation I mentioned that I collect coins. She told me she had some her late husband had collected and asked if I was interested ... of course I said yes.

A couple days later I met her at her home. She had a small box of coins that did not look very promising. There were some brown box Ike dollars, silver halves and other misc coins. I was thinking about $100.00 worth of coins until I opened a 1967 Canadian proof set. It had the $20 gold coin. So now I told her we were at several hundred dollars, she was so happy she started to show me more coins.

At one point she handed me a envelope asking if Japanese currency was worth anything. When I looked in the envelope the first bill I saw was this Large size series 1917 note .. now I was very happy. Also with the Japanese notes were two 1857 obsolete notes, a $3.00 and a $5.00 from Lumberman's bank of Grand Haven Michigan, sorry I sold these before I took pictures.

I also bought some of her gold jewelry and 5 guns .. but that is another story.

Here is the 1917 note that is now part of my collection

I am still sorting through a lot of the common stuff and still selling the stuff I am not interested in. Still have couple thousand wheat cents and foreign coin and currency to go through.

I gave her $2100 but will send her more once I have everything sold.

We have (almost) 2 in common. I have an Ithaca Mod 37 featherweight (not a deerslayer) and a Remington 760 pump in .270, also with a Leupold. Love both guns and have them since I was a kid. Nice haul... and the coins and currency are great too. I'm always amazed seeing these old bills how ornate they are. They just seem to have something our modern bills lack.

The Canada set was a nice looking set, I have seen many 1967 Canadian proof set this was the first one that had the 20 dollar gold coin. But I sold it.

I had actually set the set back down before it click I was looking at a gold coin. Another cool part, it was still in the original shipping box from 1967. I think they were issued at around $40.00. I paid the lady $750 for it, the gold coin was a little over a half oz.

I think so too

I have been trying to put together a set of one dollar notes, 1928 to date. After getting this note I think
I will take my collection back to 1899.

Great find. It's interesting how people have these type of "old" things put away. Trust is most importance. Thanks for being a friend to this kind lady.

Beautiful note and heart warming that you both helped each other (she benifits from your honesty and expertise and you benifit with some new additions that don't cost you the world)
