I've been buying a few mint sets and packaged singles of coins I haven't been able to noodle out of general circulation, and am wondering what others think of breaking up sets to get the individual coins out into 2x2's.
One of the sets I have has a toned coin in it already, so I'm not concerned with cutting this one up....
I see on the auction sites that a fair few coins offered as singles have come from mint/proof/PNC's and often sell for close to the cost of a packaged lot, such as the colored 50's, the 2005 COA 50, and 2001 colored dollar.
I like to have consistency in my collection, and all the differing types of packaging put out by the RAM over the years makes attractive presentation rather difficult. 2x2's look much neater, and are rather more manageable!

Love to hear what others think

I leave some in and crack others out. Depends how they fit into my collection.

I know Trout cracks everything open and it looks neat and consistent with them all being in 2x2s.

Do what you like really. No one is going to condemn you for cracking sets open, that's for sure.

I don't see any problem at all wiyh cutting up mint sets to get the coins you need for your collection & as you say selling off the coins you don't want is good too, gives you money for thing you do want.
We have one member here who I don't think owns anny coins that are still in mint packaging,he pulls them all out & puts them in 2X2's,each collectors has different preferences to how they want to store their coins & it's up to you how you want your coins displayed,if you think it looks good go for it.

If you knew me you wouldn't need to ask
A box knife is my best friend
If you need the coin for your set go for it.
There are many decimal coins that only came out in sets and are the only way to get these coins.
Personally I don't buy the sets to collect them as such I buy them for the coins.

If you are buying as an investment I would suggest that you leave them in their plastic prisons and they will probably be worth more at a later date.
But if you are collecting for your own enjoyment and pleasure by all means cut the poor buggers out, they look sooo much better in an album with all their other mates

If the mintage is quite high for the mint sets, sure why not. But if it isn't, I'm much happier to pay a higher premieum for mint sets that aren't broken up.
