Acetone will not hurt the copper. But if it is verdigris acetone will not remove it. Depending on severityit may be a lost cause...

Depends on how severe the verdigris is. If it's stable, I would not remove.

Can't post a picture as some of you know. It's verdigris/corrossion on the edge with a few minor spots in the field. I remember oldtimers (which I basically am) used to use oil of just about any kind and soak for a month. Olive oil, car oil, etc. oil. Any experience doing this? Otherwise the coin is VF.

Verdigris is not soluble in oil, all it will do is create an oily coin.

Every coin is different and will require a specific conservation approach based on the level of the problem. It's not wise for anyone to make suggestions without first seeing the coin.

It might be a form of the coin growing. This means you should plant it in the ground and see if a Large Cent tree grows.
Just kidding I hope you know. No such thing as a Cent Tree. They are all bushes.
On a serious note, as Thad said, not a good idea to mess with if you know nothing about what it could be. You could try numerous things but may well ruin the coin completely.
