I have no clue. Hopefully someone on here can tell me what happened with this Mint Mark?

Proofs are hard to photograph...this one might be a candidate to send to Chuck at coppercoins.

Definitely worth it to send it to coppercoins.com or James Wiles. It could be the first RPM for that one.

This is not a repunched mintmark. It is common on 1983-1985 proof cents and has something to do with how the mintmark was applied to the die.

As a side note, anyone who says a proof coin has Die Deterioration Doubling does not understand Die Deterioration Doubling. Proof dies are used for fewer than 10,000 strikings. It takes FAR more than that for Die Deterioration to become evident. In general - proof coins cannot have Die Deterioration Doubling.

Very strange. I guess it was a newbie punching the dies then? Or was it done by some other method? Just curious as to why those 3 years, if you had any insight on it or not.

OK, Now the question is, would this detract from the value of this coin, I believe this coin could grade at PF68+

No it would not detract from the value of the coin because the anomaly is too small to affect the grade. ou should hope for at least a PF69 grade, because PF68 wouldn't be a big winner.

I do hope for PF69, I was being optimistic, I think it could grade at PF69. I purchased it from a dealer in Tulsa, paid $2.00 for the mint set, still in original package.

I doubt this would have come from a mint set - the coin is proof.

Why would a proof coin have so many die polish marks?

Just from your pics. The spots, polish lines/scratches etc.
This coin will not grade at 69. Just keep it, as it is interesting.
