Umm, actually no.

It is the center of an encasement. This would be different from 'mounted' as it is die struck inside a ring of metal (usually aluminum) in a private minting press. As a coin it is ruined.

I wonder if the method of encasement changed over the years.
I mentioned on the forum once before about how the encased
coins that I had from back in the 50's and 60's when I was a kid did not show this kind of damage on them and for that matter any damage at all after I knocked them out of the holder. These were mostly Indian's then Wheats later on.
At the time of the post I was wondering how this damage could have been done that way when indeed my coins did not look like that and also if any way possible that it could have been done during the strike.

This type of damage is not possible during mint striking.

I have see numerous wheats with this exact same effect. The process has not changed.
