Found a whole slew of these for auction from a seller on ebay...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1924-P-Linc...cmd=ViewItem

The seller claims there were no chemicals used to produce this effect. So HOW can this be done? Heat?

It's heat but there is some serious cleaning with acetone and maybe ethyl alcohol before the torch is used to add the color. It has been pointed out to me that the coin is annealed by this process making it more likely to wear.

IMHO, these coins are absolutely ugly. There is nothing natural about it. I hate to see this happen to a 'wheatie' or to any other coin for that matter.

Be that as it may (I mostly agree), but they are selling like "hotcakes" (pun intended)

Heck... I have thousands of old common wheats that I can rainbow up and pop on ebay for a 750% profit - just feel a little bad about damaging an otherwise beautiful coin. (although when I used to sell knives I showed my prospect that my meat shears could cut a penny into a corcscrew on many occasions - ahh in my youth)

I asked him what he did to them and he said they're laser treated.

Raymo,

Duh - I didnt even think to ask the seller a question... thanks for finding out!

I wonder if it's just the heat from the laser or what.

I think he may of been trying to go for a Patriotic theme there. Some lasers do not produce heat. Then there are the type than can do etching. Etching would be easily seen though
on the coins surface and would ruin it. Not sure exactly of the type of laser/intensity etc. that he used to get these color patterns. Guess i'll try a few of my lasers and see what happens. "You'll shoot your eye out" :)

I would guess its from the heat. Maybe Indian1 can experiment a bit and let us know.
