Here the 46 cent I posted on recent purchases, showed up in the mail today. Interesting at first I was thinking PMD acid but with the doubling? There is PMD in the hair. Thoughts

Weird. Could we have a good clear shot or two of the rims/edges? I'd love to see if they're nice and smooth or whether they have a story to tell...

Is it light weight? Looks like acid damage to me.

You have to ask yourself, if you understand the coin striking process, how the dies and the pressure applied to the planchet can produce an effect like that, especially in the fields, which are the highest points of the dies. Judging by the inside points of the maple leaf, that coin was fully struck (i.e., metal flowed to the deepest part of the dies), so how on earth did the fields end up like that? Secondly, you can see the rippled effect even on the rim, which shows no other sign of Die Deterioration or die failure.

Short answer is that the coin was not struck like that. You are looking at PMD, probably with acid. Did you get a weight on your coin?

Genuine errors can occur with somewhat similar patterns, like the chrome plating peeling off the die (mortar set) or Die Deterioration causing an 'orange peel' texture over the whole surface of the coin. Your coin is neither. See also this thread: https://goccf.com/t/86498

SPP the weight is 3.2 grams what throws me off if the doubling of the leaf and on kings head as well in the letters on the obverse.

Right on the button, SPP. An acid bath is exactly what it looks like.

Collector67, check out the 1949 penny on SPP's link. It has doubling just like yours, as well as the rippling and the "wavy date". I think you'll find it's the mate to your 1946.
