Cool...most likely the piece has broken off the die. The edge look to crisp and uniform to be filled.

yes I would agree with cladhunter, looks like a piece broke off, since the bottom has the full "I" shape. very cool find, I would never notice this haha

Quote: Cool...most likely the piece has broken off the die. The edge look to crisp and uniform to be filled. That is impossible. Remember, the devices on the coin are incuse (sunk) into the die, and the fields are the highest points of the dies. There is nothing to "break off". If the die was intentionally created that way, which means at least one master punch (which creates the die) was made like that, or a piece "broke off" the master punch, which then created a die. In either case, there should be thousands like this one. I am skeptical of that actually happening, it is probably a partially filled die. However, if these things turn up in droves, then either scenario above may be possible...

Hi folcan99Take a look at your coin below and also the top of the "I" does not have a depression in it, and it really looks like and "1".

I bumped this up as I am curious to know if anyone else has come accross the same errors on these 2008 Penny.

Not yet, but I'm still looking. I think this weekend I'll dig through my hoard and see if I can find one or two. I've been intrigued by this error since you first mentioned it, folcan, and I think it's about time I checked my stash!

@pennysaver, finally someone listened lol. I'm just curious as to how bad this really is and should it be added to the charlton as a common error looking like the number one.

Just an update, I have found 3 more of these coins out of 8 so far. I'm still going through a couple of rolls left.

@dialog_gvf, looks like you have a slight cross on the top of the I. Most of the ones I find look like the number 1. Your pic is too small to really make out the I.

The letters are raised on the coin, and hence incuse on the die (so, fills not breaks). It seems to affect 10%-15% of 2008s. I quickly found 20 examples. In addition to the ones above, there is this: A very thin top-right serif.

Thanks dialog_gvf. Yours looks like it has a partial. There are alot of the number one version as I found a few more after posting that I had found 3 more. This is definitely and error and should be posted as such since there are 2 different versions, one being a good font and a bad one.
