Acting on the recommendation of a fellow "Coin Community" member, I am starting this thread on "recreating a Pub Coin".

I have started the ''chemical tests" on some shiny new 5 cent coins. I am going to dunk them in an unholy concoction of liquids in order to produce a "pub coin" (maybe).

The shiny 5 cent coins will be immersed in the following (from left to right in the below pic).

- Hot English Mustard - an excess of this causes violent reaction to the nose and eyes. Lets see what it can do to "Cupro-nickel"!
- Mr Muscle drain cleaner
- Red Bull high energy drink
- ye olde Guiness - I figure the dark malt should engrave itself as deeply on the 5 cent coin as it does upon the hearts of true English/Irish men/women :-)
- Albertson's Soft Fruity White
- Dr Pepper (yes they still sell this stuff here in Melbourne !)
- Dracula's green energy drink - which probably has similarities to:
- Power Force Heavy Duty Cleaner
- Hoyts Hot Peppers.

I shall also dunk a coin in very salty water.

I shall leave the coins in there for two weeks. Will show pics afterwards.

In my "scientific alter ego"

Squire

I would think the easiest way to reproduce a "pub Coin" would be to get a rusty tin and put a bit of salt water in it then leave it for a while

Good idea trout . I will drop a rusty nail into the salt water and put the five cents into that as well.

What makes a "pub coin" a "pub coin"?

How can you attempt to create a pub coin without beer slops, as found on a typical bar counter?

In a previous posting on the "Noodling Find of the Week" thread Appleangel07 mentioned that he has a stained coin with "Bar" written on it.

The hypothesis was that some soft drink, beer or other liquid had toned it !

I think this may be the origin of "Pub Coin"

Yes sel_691 - why should "Mythbusters" have all the fun

Hmmm...Jeff. May have to slop the Guinness over my kitchen "counter" and then dunk the coin in it. Won't look or smell good if I leave this for 2 weeks tho'

Sounds like you have a great excuse to have a "Booze up"
All you would need to do is put all the dregs from stubbies, cans and glasses in a bucket and chuck the coins in that.
I have no idea if it would work but it would be a fun way of going about the experiment

And in true Mythbusters style are you going to do the "myth on steroids" bit as well.

Hmm. a coin in high molar HCL maybe would cover off the acid test. now to get some strong NaOH to use as a base/alkali test.

Guys, there are so many things that you could soak a coin in just for the heck of it.
A "Finish" dishwasher tablet for example. Napisan anyone? How about battery acid?

Better slow down Pete, some of these things are just to cruel to do to a poor coin.

What no fertiliser?
Looking at your prospective subjects, they do not appear to have a condition, so I am unsure of the grounds for them requiring "treatment"
You have a fascinatingly eclectic mix lined up there - like trout, I would also like to see some use of tins, or at least popping some of them in the can with the imbibing liquids, unless of course you are only sparing a portion for "science" after sampling the rest to ensure its "quality"

Ok. Some more options - permutations, in order to replicate the "Pub scene".

- cigarettes soaked in Guinness
- Guinness mixed with hyperchemical energy drinks, wine and high octane lollywater (cruisers ?)
- hmmm... pizzz would add to the authenticity of the "Pub scene", but I might just have to stop short on that one ...

Steroids are not necessary. I have Red Bull and Dracula's green energy drink. These are perfectly legal "performance enhancers" so I can sleep soundly at night . Will be nice to see the "side effects" of these on the coins though .

Of course only the best ingredients for this research FNQ. Tasting for quality will be a "must" (though I'll give "Power-force" and "MrMuscle" a miss - thanks)

Wow Squire!
You got plenty of interest on your experiment!
I am tempted to do something similar too.
To be truly "mythbusterly" something needs to explode, but I dont think that quite fits....
