A partner of mine who used to buy BU bags and cherry pick them for resale back in the 1970's has about 30 or so 1878 B1 reverse specimens left. While going through these looking for specimens to buy for myself I noticed that about 15 or so of them had totally flattened talons so I also assume they were coined on the same day as the flattening was exactly the same. They all are MS63-64 so it's not from circulating. What caused this would you think?

If it's just the talons that are weak it could be the die was filled with grease maybe?

If it's the Left side ...A Nun may of smacked them with a ruler to get the bird to change hands! That's what they did to me in 1st grade at St Jude.

Yes, it's just the Talons. The rest of the coin is struck sharply on all and quite lustrous. I've seen this on other dates and mints but because the 15 were all the same I thought this a unique mini-hoard. I thought maybe polishing or the die maybe plugged in the Talon area?

@twohawks, did the nuns fix you? Are you a righty now?

@1893S I would imagine it would take a few strikes to clear whatever residue caused this. Any sign of a progression from the 15 examples you have or are they all consistently the same?

the ones I have seen have all been on the Eagles Left Talon (viewers right) but I am not really sure what causes it. I know there are allot of them from 1878 that has the talons like this not only B1 Reverses though. Its usually the middle toe (I guess you can call it that) that is almost flat and non existent on some of them

Would'nt it be a safe call to say, the die was filled, like previously stated, especially if the rest of the coins are struck sharper, MS-63-64'S. I would think that if there are 15 of the coins found in the same bag or lot, you might see a progression in the effected areas, IF you look very closely, ... you might..........

B1's are easy to attribute - may I assume you've found them all to be the same VAM? I've seen something like you're describing, if I have it right:

1878-B1-Reverse

That's an 80A, for the record.

I was going to say it seems the VAM-80's are the worst B1's I have seen but there are a few others that the middle claw is almost gone also. I will have to look through the coins to see which ones do have this weakness and which ones do not. I am not sure what caused it whether it be a filled die or something else (even though I don't see how it could be a filled die with all the different ones), I just know I have definitely noticed it

Edit: I went through a few pictures I already had and here are what they look like and their VAM's. All of these are graded between MS-64-MS-65

VAM-70

VAM-79

Thanks for the photo Dave and info Bryan, I'm sorry I haven't checked them yet to check for any progression of flatness. I've been busy but I will soon. I can't upload photos onto this site as I have old fashioned dial-up and it just doesn't work. But I could take photos with my cell to send. Thanks Erik
