Today's mail brought what I imagine will be the first of many ads regarding Presidential dollars.

Actually, I did business with this company several years ago, and was quite satisfied. However that promotion was for stamps honoring each President, one Presidential panel at a time.

This deal includes a panel for each President, including his Presidential dollar, a stamp or two, information about him, and pictures.

The reader can decide if that is worth $17.95 plus $2 for shipping for each panel.

I did find a few statements in the ad to be, shall we say, a little misleading. At least they were in my opinion.

Here are examples. Decide for yourself.

"This new series...is already sparking great speculation and competition throughout the United States."

"Each coin will be minted for a limited time, and every coin may not be released in every state, so assembling a complete collection could be a challenge."

"Demand for Presidential coins, destined to be one of the grandest coin series ever issued by the United States will be unprecedented."

"...individual coins...are sure to be hoarded by collectors."

"Don't miss out on this collecting opportunity of a lifetime."

Soundz like a standard promotion.
They all try to make you feel that you absolutely cannot go without what they are offering.
But if you were in a plane that was rapidly losing altitude, would you be thinking of your coin collection?

Typical marketing hype geared towards the non-collector. The only probable plus I can see is that this kind of "deal", while being a real ripoff, might spark interest in coin collecting to a new generation.

It could also be a turnoff when the collector realizes they were ripped off and their collection is worthless.

Bottom line, in my humble opinion, is I collect coins! Not panels, stamps, containers, plated or colored coins. I won't pay for hype and refuse to pay premiums because someone added a $1.50 worth of nothing to make the package more attractive to the non-collector and then sell it for huge mark-ups! Lets face the fact, nothing will beat a good $20.00 album should you desire to store as a collection but when one figures the total cost over a period of years there is NO WAY one will ever be able to sell these hyped displays and break even. In my opinion anything like this is a losing proposition from the very start.

Gary: That sounds like the Flyer that we got today in our Sunday newspaper. It caught my eye (ofcourse) and does look to be a nice set with all of the bonuses, just not for a Coin Collector!
