I bid on a 1971 Brown Box Ike on ebay on a whim, and ended up winning the thing for $9.04 (+$3 shipping). As soon as I won it, I noticed another auction by the same seller for the same description. Worse yet, it had the *exact same picture* as the auction I won! I contacted the seller to ask what was up. His reply: "It is the same thing. My parents bought one each for me and my brother. They are identical, so I only took one pictue." I told him that when it comes to coins, accuracy of description and condition is everything. If a seller doesn't specify in his or her auction that the item pictured is not the actual item being sold, the buyer can only assume that the picture is indeed the item up for sale. I can't determine by the picture is the coin I won, or if it's a picture of the coin he's selling to another buyer. So even if he sends me real pictures, would you go through with the purchase? Also just curious, did I make a good buy at $9?

Yes, I would keep it. I'd also bid or buy the other one as the coin has $8.67 worth of silver in it. You are getting it for close to melt.

I agree, that is a good price regardless of condition.

good buy but it is against ebay policy to post a picture of a coin that is not the one you are actually getting.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I'm going to go through with the purchase because the seller has been very responsive to email and answering my questions well. He says the case is scratch free and only slight corner bent on the box.
Next question for y'all: do I leave this in the case, or crack it open and store it some other way?

Don't sweat it man. Worse case, it could have some of that blueish/white haze that some seem to have.

Probably to late now but next time try buying both and see if you can save on the shipping charges that way. This seller would have probaly accommodated your request as most want to get positive reviews back.

My wife just called to say this coin arrived in the mail today. Stupid thing to get excited about, I know, but this was my first "official purchase". I'll let you all know if it's in as good of shape as I was told.

To me, that's not getting an Ike at near melt. If it was free shipping, then it would be near melt. I agree with Billmoody - if you can get combined shipping that changes the math a LOT. The is a seller that charges $3 flat shipping regardless of items purchased. I bid on several items, but always factored in the shipping to my bid and lost quite a few auctions. Finally, there was something that I wanted enough that I was willing to bid high enough to win. After that I picked up several items at near melt. Even picked up an Ike for 99 cents!

Well, the outer cardboard box has some dings, but the plastic case is sealed & scratch-free and the coin itself looks stellar. I can see why many people free these coins from their original packaging. This box is uuuuugggglyyyy! It's going to take a lot of willpower to not free Ike from his prison of 1970s-fake-wood-panel-packaging!
