I think I buy a genuine Brazilian 640 Reis finally (I hope so).
The nicely toned 1804 Brazilian was bought a month ago and find the word letters on both sides are crude. The weight is 18.71 grams (believed to be higher than normal). The diameter is 37.5mm. I believe this species is a counterfeit but I don't know why it is so nicely toned. Can toning of a coin artificial?

Then I search for another Brazilian 640 Reis and bought this 1802. This coin weighs 17.92 grams and diameter is 37mm. The letters are much better struck and I believe it is a real one on the whole.

The hitting sound of both coins are the same (by my ears) so I believe both of them are made with same silver contents.

However, I find the crowns from both coins and the design of globe on the reverse side are different. Are there any varieties of this coin? The Word Coin Catalog seems lack of a lot of pictures of this type of coins. Who guys have the same coins and like to advice or comment on my pictures.?

Both seem to be original, but they are from different mints. They are
640 Reis 1802-R(Rio de Janeiro) Die variety: 8A(it's classified with the highest rarity scale - RRR)(yet the price doesn't change a whole lot with it)
640 Reis 1804-B(Bahia) Die variety: 4A(common)

Thank you so much, GMP. It seems you are a Brazilian or you are an expert of old Brazilian coins. You solve my long-lasting problem. I will definitely keep both coins as a treasure. They are really rare!

Hi GMP, the weight of this coin is 19.03grams and diameter 37.7-37.8mm. Is this another version of Bahia? Is it an original? The weight is too high so I am suspicious to its authenticity. Would you please to leave your idea about this coin? Thank you in advance.

It's the die variety 2B(common). About the weight, it's supposed to be around 18g, but the 640 Reis from Bahia (from this period) tend to weight around 19g(I've seen as far as 19.5g)u. That leads some to believe they are not original, but I'm still to see a counterfeit one! I guess that the poor engraving, the weak spots (like the base of the R(BRAS) on your coin) and the higher than normal weight don't help the case...
