So a dealer who called on me yesterday offered me a Morgan dollar 1899 ( no mint mark noticed).

The surface had slight pitting in places and the edge showed signs of wear and discoloration (of a base metal?)

I didn't have the time to weigh it but my first thoughts, and I said so, was that it was a copy. As she didn't try to contradict me I assummed she either knew or had an idea that it was.

I did however buy a Great Britain 1 Shilling 1943 (#853) for just less than $2. A new type for me.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that thanks to this forum, over the years, I have learned so much and especially where it really matters. I now feel much more confident on silver be it Dollars, Trade dollars or Reales.

So just wanted to say thank you one and all.

I'd be careful if I were you with giving out any personal information to anyone. IF that dealer was able to call on you, they have to much personal information as to who you are and what you collect.

scales and a magnet are very helpful tools in that situation.

"a Great Britain 1 Shilling 1943 (#853) for just less than $2."
- 5.7 grams of 50% silver - that was a good buy.

During the reigns of KG6 and QE2, the Brits had two types of shilling - English and Scottish -
"The English shilling of George VI has the lion standing left on a large crown, while on the Scottish shilling the lion is facing, holding a sword & sceptre flanked by St Andrews Cross and a thistle."
