In Australia these are a highly sought-after collector's item with a very strong following of enthusiastic fans. (fanatics) I have never seen any reference to them on the CCF and I'm wondering if they exist in the States PNC stands for Postal Numismatic Cover, a stamped, first day of issue envelope, containing a coin displayed on a card that is visible throught a small cut-out in the envelope. Both coin and stamp usually have a mutual theme and are usually jointly issued by the Mint and Postal Service. I'm curious.

As a PNC collector, I collect PNCs mainly from Australia, because the current main source of PNCs is from Australia post and the secondary source is from third party companies. In the USA I would venture to say (based on my experience) that most PNCs come from third party companies. Having Australia Post working in conjunction with the mint helps the Aussie PNCs to maintain their value and this differs from a private company creating one with no base value and letting ebay or some other forum determine value. The Australian PNCs are listed int McDonalds guide but American PNCs are not listed in the RedBook. For those who do not collect them they will not realize the value of them or how high the price of a coin can go when in a limited edition PNC.

Could you provide a couple of examples of U.S. and Australian PNC for us to look at? I do have some from third party companies, but honestly have no idea of their value. I have a Hansen (1st president of Continental Congress and Elias Boudinot, 2nd President of Continental Congress).. Point of interest, Boudinot and I were born in the same little town in New Jersey... Thanks for your help rg.

The US equivalent of PNC's is FDC's (First Day Covers). These are produced by the US Postal Service as far as I know. Some of these include a medal of some sort, but most are just the canceled stamp noted as a first day.
From what I have seen, they do not seem to be as sought after here in the US. I think there are too many produced so the supply is larger than the demand. I could be wrong here, though, as I do not have a lot of knowledge in stamps.

Is this a lot different from the US Mint's first day covers? They have been issuing them with the State Quarters program. Rob

Correct me if I am wrong , but I believe that Aussie PNCs are a hybrid of the US Postal First Day Covers and US Mint First Day Coin covers. Essentially you have an envelope with a graphical depiction of an event, person, place, etc. The envelope has a window for a coin commemorating the purpose and a cancelled stamp commemorating the purpose also. AFAIK, neither the US Mint or US Postal Service makes a specific item like this- it combines numismatics and philatelics. The postal FDCs have the stamp and the graphic(no coin) and the First Day Coin Covers have the coin and graphic, but only a generic postmarked stamp(usually flag or Liberty). I know the Postal Service is issuing stamps for all states that correlate with the 50 State Quarters program. The closest thing to a PNC would be this: http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=10148Of course, these are not on official postmarked mailing envelopes, just an informational card with a coin and stamp. Unfortunately, this is as close as we get to a PNC

to be fair the PNC issued by Fleetwood of the bicentennial of the USA joint issue with Australia is nice and has some value. I just find Fleetwood overpriced and many of there PNCs have a note of authenticity on the reverse of the envelope signed by the President of Fleetwood, which to me reduces the value.

When did the PNC's start in Australia? Here in the US they were "invented" by the 99 Company in 1964 with the first day of issue PNC for the Kennedy half dollar. They actively issued PNC's until sometime in the 1980's I believe when the company folded. Here are images of the one they made for the first day of issue for the 1969 Lincoln Cent

I don't know how any body else feels on this. but.. $45.00 for a 2007 $1.00 coin with zero errors or anything that make it worth collecting. (MHO) IS CRAZY! sorry if anyone here is not with me on this one but I don't see anything on that piece of paper or the coin that would want me to pull from my pocket with somewhere around 2-3 hours of hard work. and there are many many more that would call that a days pay. (i hope not though) I just don't see it. Gary
